Hi and welcome,
I strongly recommend that you give it more than a go. Do it properly and it works like a charm but as with anything worth doing there are no instant results.

Have a look at some of the pictures on here for the results that are possible over the medium term.

Even those that oppose the diet never ever say that it doesn't work.

Good luck, Your weight loss is just about on the high side of do-able if you include moderate exercise.

I would disagree with the assertion that this would not work as well as some other diets to lose 10 pounds. There are no fool-proof plans and all of them have their limitations.

Regarding you meal plan I agree that you need to include a few more vegi's and also lots and lots of water. You should be drinking a minimum of half your body weight in water each day.

Lastly, I think if you combine this plan with exercise it can't be beat. Your body runs great on Ketone's and combine an hour or so of good quality of exercise each day and you will more than likely lose. You may not hit your goal weight but you might lose that 10 pounds of fat and gain 5 lbs of muscle.

My opinion is that you just need to create some sort of caloric deficit each day. So if you have a Base Metabolic Rate of 1600 and you only consume 1100 per day you have created a deficit of 500 calories that day. Do that every day and by the end of the week you have created a 3500 calorie deficit. The good news here is that 3500 calories equals about 1 lb fat. If you can add in a workout each day that burns another 500 calories 5 times a week and you are now up to a 6500 calorie deficit for the week. That's just shy of 2 lbs of burned fat for the week.

Assuming the above is an accurate assessment of your BMR, which I have no idea if it is or not. You can find web sites that will help you get an approximate BMR (google it). It is possible that you could reach your goal weight or come close.

Having said all of that, the body is can be pretty smart and can make adjustments to compensate for changes in diet, exercise, etc. If you decide that you need to take in 1100 calories per day do not do it in 2 meals. You need to eat all day long to keep your metabolism humming along.

If I were eating those same foods as a plan it would look more like this.

Breakfast: 2 Eggs
Snack: 2 Sausages
Lunch: Baked Chicken, Salad Greens
Snack: Some Vegi around 100 calories
Dinner: Salmon, Brocolli
Snack: Some 100 calorie snack

You can plug this into Fitday.com and it will give you a pretty good idea of how your eating.

You will hear people saying that when doing Atkins calories don't matter, which is true in the beginning and when you have 50, 100, 200 pounds to lose (BMR's 3000+ Calories Per day). As you get closer to your goal weight you BMR also drops which in turn means that calories will begin to matter more. The real beauty of Atkins, just my opinion, is that you can eat the things you like to eat and not be hungry all of the time. It's hard to stick to a plan that leaves your stomach rumbling and your body weak from lack of food. I have been eating on an Atkins plan for a year and a half and I can honestly say that I don't remember the last time I was truely hungry.

Good Luck.

Thanks guys, your replies have been so useful!!

i see what you mean with the snacking, but after such a hugh fat/protein breakfast im not hungry at all until lunch, even then im not as hungry as i was when i was eating porridge for breakfast.

im going to stick with it, bt i think my menu for the next 2 weeks will be something like this:

Breakfast - eggs with mayo or butter, occational bacon or sausage.

Lunch - large salad and cooked veg, (brocilli, peppers etc). Either fish or some chicken/turkey, dressing made with 1 tablespoon olive oil and lemon, balsamic vinegar (need to check the carbs)

Dinner - again either fish/chicken/turkey, roast veggies or salad,

for excercise, im weight training for about an hour 3 times a week and trying to incorporate walking into my day, either walt to or from work.

already i feel like my blood sugar has levelled out, im not hungry mid morning or afternoon, i do miss tea with milk, but im trying to move onto herbal teas instead.

10 pounds is really my absolute max i would want to lose, 6lb in 5 weeks would be fantastic, but the more the better

I surely wish you the best...this certainly cannot hurt you in any respect and you may find this is a good way, after you get to where you want to be, to adopt as a maintenance plan forever! There are so many benefits, as you get older, to be on this plan. I'm 65 and no longer worry about diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.

Good luck! Let us know how it works for you. Most of us had quite a bit more than 10 pounds to lose so it will be interesting to learn how it works for folks near their desired weight.
