Shrimp seasoned and cooked with the shell on
I have a really silly question... I'm just wondering if this could hurt me...
Ok, so my BF wanted Chinese food for dinner so I went to our normal restaurant and I got him the normal fried rice, noodles, beef/ broc you know all of the bad foods... for myself I got grilled shrimp and small pork ribbs. oh and a little bit of egg drop soup. The shrimp is grilled in some awesome seasoning mix (no sugar) and jalapenos. Well the shrimp still has the shell and the tail. I like to eat the shrimp with shell but not the tail of course. (only when I eat it from this place). Like I said It is only grilled in seasoning and the ribs are baked with seasons, that's it. Will eating the shell on the shrimp hurt me? This is a silly quesion...I know... Thanks for any help, Melissa began 1-12-05 373lbs http://www.lowcarbsite.com/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif http://www.lowcarbsite.com/images/sm...on_redface.gif fell off 8/07 240lbs http://www.lowcarbsite.com/images/sm...on_biggrin.gif Began again 1-27-09 290lbs :x Goal---Undecided on weight but untimately just wanting...Happiness!!! |
You eat the shell? I've never heard of that.... can't begin to imagine it, either. Does it chew up?? LOL
Will it hurt you? No.... I don't see how it would. And, it's NOT a silly question at all! Don't be afraid to ask questions. (the teacher in me HAD to say that) Tril |
Nah, not for me!
Just try and imagine the discomfort that undigested prawn shells would inflict if you were "bound up". OUCH! |
I eat shrimp with the shell on. Once you get used to it they don't taste any different and it saves all of the messing about peeling them.Never done me any harm.

Usually when they serve shrimp with the shells on you also have the legs to deal with. Do you eat those too?
Speaking of shell fish. I love shell fish, just about all kinds. One of my favorites is muscles. Have a question though. Every now and then I get muscles with some kind of fibery thing that looks like hair sticking out of them. What is that? Is it edible? I've also heard that shell fish has just about the highest protein to calorie ratio, so keep it up. It is just about the best for this or any diet. |
Sounds like "bearded mussels". I don't think it will hurt you to eat the "beard"... but I don't think you're supposed to.

Tril, thanks for the info on the Mussels. I usually don't prepare them fresh myself or I would have probably seen this cleaning process before.
And would have more than likely spelled Mussels correctly in my original post. I may have eaten it before by accident but it couldn't be any worse for you than eating the shell on a shrimp. |
Being in FL we can get shrimp pretty easy. My wife broils them (shell on). Melt a stick of butter on them and sprinkle liberally with Cavenders greek seasoning.(Don't worry about putting to much on them)
We then take them out of the shell to eat them. You still get a lot of the flavor from the Cavenders. Thats how shell on shrimp are served in the restuarants (in the shell) and you peel them while at the table! These are fantastic. By peeling them it slows you down and you don't eat as many;Thankfully. Don't forget it does not take shrimp long at all to cook. Most people have a tendency to over cook them. Good luck. This is a must try! |
