I have a heartburn problem in general and take prilosec when necessary. '
I started Atkins again yesterday. I did have heartburn yesterday and today but I was able to get by by drinking cold water and did not need to pop pills. My liver says "thank you".

Someone here mentioned that Atkins helped their depression. I've been wondering if it's not a "problem" to avoid carbs altogether (you know what I mean) and won't I miss out on having higher serotonin levels? I don't remember Atkins bringing me down in the past but someone said that I'll get edgy from it now. I wonder. Any thoughts on serotonin levels?

Low carb always improves my mood... my outlook.... my "joy level". I also read recently that most acid reflux issues are a result of chronic dehyration. So drinking more water may help that. Certainly worth a try.

I drink tons. I'm sure that my reflux has to do with SUGAR and/or flour.
Usually when I go off sugar and white flour it stops. But, I ate alot of mayo at dinner and it's really doing a job on me now....

Default Heartburn ALSO went away? Anyone else?
By day 3 of induction, I was off my three daily pills of Antacid/heartburn medicine...

Any explanations? Anyone else experience this?

This is another of a slew of medical problems seemingly 'cured'.

My list...

Sleep Apnea (sp)
Acid Reflux (This was so bad that some nights I would sit up unable to breath from acid that just mad it's way up my esophagus)
Pre-Diabetic (Tested 128 on 12 hour fast test)
Left knee no longer slips
Hypertension (Doc was ready to medicate me)
High Cholesterol
Standing back pain
Depression

I am also lactose intolerant but I don’t really do much dairy on this plan. I used to eat a big bowl of ice cream every night and my stomach would scream in agony and for reason I kept doing it. The only dairy I have now is occasional cottage cheese and carb-master yogurt for an afternoon snack almost every day. I am not sure that it is enough to say that I am cured from my lactose intolerance.

I'm with you guys, my general sense of well being is much better and a host of mystery ailments I took for granted as a part of getting older are simply gone since I started this - and I'd say most of it is NOT directly tied to the weight loss at all. In other words, I do not believe that something "normal" like weight watchers would have conveyed the same health benefits if I somehow (miraculously) managed to lose the same amount of weight on the program.

There are people who want to use Atkins as a tool, not a way of life. Something along the lines of "If I do this crazy program for 6 months, I can lose enough weight to look good for , and then I can go back to a "normal" way of eating.

Maybe the 'normal' way of eating affects everyone differently, but for me personally switching back would lead to such a decreased quality (and very likely quantity) of life, that I never, ever intend to go back.

Disclaimer: Technically I've changed to following more of a protein power/primal WOE than straight Atkins, but they're very compatible and follow the same core principles.

Hindsight is 20/20, and I don't want to rant, but from my current vantage point, it's hard to understand how the "common wisdom" continues to be so widely accepted.

Almost everyone acknowledges that we have a growing obesity problem, but the more we try to apply a "food pyramid" style of solving it, the worse it gets. Overweight people are generally looked down upon, either for "overeating" or "being lazy". While potentially true in some cases, after my own experiences I have to wonder how many people are stuck in a catch 22 - eating a low fat / carb heavy diet... which is causing the very thing they were trying to fix/avoid in the first place!

I truly think this is a period in our history that will be looked back by future generations in much the same way we look back at the people who believed the earth was flat or that night air caused people to get sick. At least I hope that's the case. The other alternative is too depressing to contemplate.

I'm convinced my lactose intolerance had something to do of the mix of certain Carbs laden food with the Cheese, not anything in my stomach that was rejecting dairy.

I eat so much cheese now its stupid....try having more than you normally would...I'd like to see what you experience.
