I believe that it is mostly due to eating green vegetables and more red meats, both of which have more than enough iron.

I also believe that too much iron in the body can raise the risk of some disease and also leads to constipation.

I found this as a quote from Dr. Atkin's but I don't have the book handy to verify:

Quote:

You may remember from chemistry class that Iron coverts readily between ferrous (two electrons) and ferric (three electrons) forms. THis makes it a player in oxidation-reduction reactions, useful in transmitting oxygen via our red blood cell, but also capable of acting like a free radical and oxidizing tissues, thereby damaging them.

This mean that any iron not affixed to the hemolobin in your blood or to other proteins simple roams around the body as unbound "free iron" and iis vulnerable to the rust like process of free radical oxidation.
Research has been done that suggests that LDL Chloresterol becomes an artery blocking danger only when it oxidizes and that men with high concentrations of iron (or copper) in thier bodies are at a particularly high risk.
That is why women have less of a chance of heart disease, because menstruation ensures that excess iron is excreted, not left to become an oxidizig menace.

The idea of "no Iron on Atkins" comes from the fact that Meat, and green leafy vegetables are major sources of Iron. and the recommended daily allowance is 10 to 15 mg a day. The recommended daily allowance is easily achieved during the Atkins approach. But by including Iron in your suppementation, you may be at risk for heart problems and damge to the stomach lining or liver damage due to excessive intake.

Exactly. There's nothing wrong with Iron... but getting more from your vitamin would be overkill (and could cause problems) when combined with the rest of the way of eating.

Could that possibly be the reason my Choleterol results from this last week were up from last year (normal last year)?? If so I will stop the Vitamins and get ones that contain no iron. Thanks for the info I appreciate it very much.

alf.... based on the age of your daughter I'm guessing you're not in menopause. You don't have to worry about the extra iron so much, as you lose some each month. Men and menopausal women have a higher risk of getting too much iron since they don't lose any through menstruation. Men and menopausal women can, however, counteract that by giving blood! Now that's a win-win!

That's good to know Tril. I live in a rural area and they come through every couple of months for blood. This week I was even in the school when they were collecting and I had totally intended to donate but my daughter had a recital at the same time so I couldn't get a chance.

Next time.
