The vegetables are actually called "FOUNDATION vegetables" on Atkins because they are the foundation of your diet.
Like Blue said, 12 to 15 net grams per day from the acceptable veggies (on the list). Net grams are total grams of carb minus grams of fiber. I believe your packaging will have this info already... but if you look up the carb count on veggies online, be sure to deduct the fiber grams from the total carb count. Larger/taller men can eat up to 8 ounces of meat per meal... that's about 225g. Women and smaller men should stick to around 6 oz per meal. Watch your cream intake... we can have it, but it's limited. The Induction food list has all of this info. Go read it and print it out!!! Good luck and stick to it... it works. |
Thank you both for your valued guidance. So far so good. I am hoping to get into some treadmill exercise to boost weight loss.

I will be starting the diet full speed ahead now that I have read the latest Atkins book for a newer me! I have been concentrating on the INDUCTION phase where I will be for at least the two weeks and perhaps longer.
This will sound stupid I know, but I really like broccoli and could I have 1 cup at a meal instead of 1/2 cup and just add up the extra net carbs in that cup? I will also be eating lots of others vegetables because I have always liked that part of the meal. I also really have cravings for sauerkraut sometimes and could eat more than 1/2 a cup of this also. I wanted to have everything in place before I started this journey. Weight has always come off very slowly and I tend to get very discouraged, so I must admit, I am afraid if this doesn't work for me I will give up. So glad I found you guys. I have ordered the Atkins Journal which should be here next week and I will faithfully fill out each day's menu. I drink at least 10 glasses of filtered water daily and I will be working out on my Wii Fit. Maybe it won't groan as much when I start succeeding on this program and I will succeed! Thanks for being here, Joanne |
Hi jo , hows things going ? did your journal arrive yet ?
jen |
Hi Jen,T
Things are going okay I think. I am starting full steam ahead on Monday, January 18th. We are having company tonight and I will be having a glass of wine, my LAST ONE! I have re-read the Induction so many times, I don't know if I will ever get my diet right. LOL! I was wondering if I can have 1 cup of cooked broccoli or cauliflower instead of 1/2 since I really enjoy these vegetables steamed?! My Journal has been shipped, so hopefully will arrive sometime next week. Thanks for asking! Until it arrives I will be writing down everything I eat during the day and getting my 20 net carbs and then I will add that to the Journal. Now, how is your week-end going so far? We have lots of snow today in Southern Ontario and it is bitter cold, but lovely by the fire. Thank you for your ongoing support to me. It really means a lot! Carpe Diem! ( Seize the Day!) Jo |
Hi Jo , Good luck for monday, follow the induction instructions and you will be just fine. its a long road ahead, my advice is just stick to it, just keep going and plan ahead.
I make extra meals up and freeze them. in the morning i just grab a meal out of the freezer and microwave it when its time to feed. I work really long hours so i find that this way of organisation works best for me. As for the broccoli.. I am from the UK i do my measurements in grams rather then cups, but to be honest with you a cup would be okay i guess? broccoli is very high in fibre. My week is going well http://www.lowcarbsite.com/images/sm...icon_smile.gif just taking one day at a time, i am a very impatient person and get disheartened easy, i have resigned myself to the fact that have a very long way to go as i would like to loose around 5 stones. I am on day 13 of induction. 2nd time round. I lost 6 lbs before christmas. I put 9 lbs on over christmas and new year. Anyway new year new start, the scales are going in the right direction. Tonight my huzband .. ( future husband) made us Moroccan lamb and it was very tasty. It's really nice and i am SO lucky i have somebody who gives me 100% support. Keep me posted jen xx |
Hi Jen,
Thanks so much for your response and I feel I have found a friend by the quick responses you give to my silly questions. Good idea to make meals ahead of time and freeze. Good luck with your upcoming marriage and yes, it is wonderful to have someone supporting you. This is difficult and I too am a very impatient person and will have to take one day at a time and hopefully will see good results. I have always lost weight really slowly and I got discouraged. Not this time/ I hope my scales go in the right direction also. That Moroccan Lamb sounds delicious. My eldest son who lives with us and my husband both are being really supportive and my son cooks awesome meals with ATKINS always in mind. God Bless, Jo xoxoxoxox P.S. Have you any snow over there? We have trons here and it is super cold! |

So far I think it is going well but I have 2 sets of scales (dial and a digital) but the dial 1 was reading far higher than the digital 1 so I go by the digitalhttp://www.lowcarbsite.com/images/sm...icon_smile.gif. 3.5k on the treadmill everyday at fast walking pace to try and speed up the weight loss and have lost around 4lbs so far.I think I should leave the scales alone and do a weigh in once a week. Good luck with your forthcoming wedding. Is it far away ? |
Hi fatboy,
I mostly use frozen vegetables so the amounts are printed on the back of packaging. you'l be looking at 1.6 grams of carbs per 100g of broccoli hope this helps. you should always try to eat your allowance of carbs. it not hard really. 1 large fresh tomato is 3 carbs or 5 small cherry tomato is 3.6 carbs. I get most of my carbs from onions-mushrooms-tomato-peppers- they are my staple food really so i always have my quota. i wouldn't use tomato puree myself as it usually contain sugar. your mushroom thingy sounds nice http://www.lowcarbsite.com/images/sm...icon_smile.gif i am sure that little amount of puree will be okay. as long as you count it into your daily allowance. They say 1 - 2 lbs weight loss a week is about average. everyone is different. I weigh myself every day , i am really bad, sometimes i weigh myself twice a day, its very addictive. i need to stop this. lol The exercise you are doing i the key! and you must remember to drink plenty of water. I am a little gym bunny at the moment, i have been running 1.6km every time i go, thats a mile it takes me 13 minutes. id like to step that up, but one step at a time hey. i do a lot of resistance training too i find that keeps my heart rate up. Im not recommending that you do this but... i ware a bin liner under my work out gear to make me sweat more and help loose more inches. i have only been doing that a week and i am noticing a difference. you can buy professional ones on line ( its called sweatz vest and they very expensive so i thought a bin liner will do. hahaha) but as i say i don't recommend you do this. my wedding not for a couple more years and there is no way i am walking down the isle at the size i am. we need to save too. we are looking 2013 http://www.lowcarbsite.com/images/sm...icon_smile.gif Hows your day today ? |
Hi Jen,
never thought about using frozens but i will next time down at the supermarket. managed to do 4.2k on the treadmill today but just at a fast (well fast for me lol) walking pace (6.8 kph). This took me about 40 minutes and my heart was pumping at around 145/150 bpm for most of it. I too have this habbit of weighing myself more than once a day and i said at the begining that i would do it once a week. I even noticed if i move the scales slightly around the room that i get different measurements.I will need to replace the battery in them soon as i am on and off them that much.So usually i weigh myself then move it and repeat this process till i see i have lost a pound. my resistance training is trying to resist spuds and pasta http://www.lowcarbsite.com/images/sm...icon_smile.gif . What kind of resistance training are you doing?I also went with a mate and did some circuit training with some punchbag work and kickboxing thrown in which was good but left me knackered. These kickboxing enthusiasts aim kicks at you at head height and it's really embarassing when i am only reaching above the knee. I suppose every little helps though. I think that it would need to be a wheelie bin liner that i would need but if thats a way to lose some weight i will certainly look into it. Weddings don't come cheap . You are King and Queen for a day then you wake up the next day and think now that was the deposit for a house we just blew. Although its great for the memories. Even if you are still pleasantly plump before your wedding the weight will fall off you the month before due to stress. |
A wee update on how things are going so far. I started doing the diet 2 days before i joined so that would have been on the 9th of January.
9th January...............19st 4lbs/270lbs/122.4kgs 29th January..............17st 13lbs/251lbs/113.8kgs So all in all feel like i am on track. I started making cauliflower and cabbage mashed together(well boiled and well mashed) with cheese, garlic and pepper which makes my plate look as it has potatoes on it and is rather tasty.More than likely i won't be able to lose at the same rate from now on but i could be doing more on the treadmill but i have been working late.some days i get more than enough water but others i am slightly under. No chocolate cravings ...............so far. Rome wasn't built in a day but i do feel like i am going in the right direction. http://www.lowcarbsite.com/images/sm...icon_smile.gif |
Thanks for the update and yes, you certainly are going in the right direction. Keep it up and just take one day at a time. Congratulations!

I went out today to buy some new scales as the digital ones i had started act a bit wonky and wouldn't start up unless i unhooked the battery.I tried a new battery but i think it's just a cheap set of scales that are past their best.New ones are good so far and giving an acurate weight measurement.I couldn't beleive how thin the scales were but i was thinking if they made them a foot high with the amount of times that i weighed myself i would get a great step on step off workouthttp://www.lowcarbsite.com/images/sm...icon_smile.gif.
In the afternoon though I went over to help out at my parents and when i finished my mother went and made brie dipped in batter with an onion sauce and i didn't have the heart to tell her that i didn't want any as she was so chuffed with her new recipe.http://www.lowcarbsite.com/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif . I took 3 bits of it so hopefully it won't set me back that much. I have had a good week and hope for another.I am now going to hide my new scales in the loft so i stop weighing myself 5 times a day and do it once a week. Hope everybody elses week has been good and thanks Joanne and Jen for the support. You must be delighted with the 9lbs loss Jen well done. |
lol 14lb in 1stone i just do this like my weight now im 14st 3lb
14 x 14 = idk lol use calculator :P then +3 = 199 http://www.lowcarbsite.com/images/sm...on_biggrin.gif but i weight my self like twice a day obsessively plus i dont lose weight from my stomach i seem to lose it from everywhere else in my body before i lose it on my stomach kinda annoying but in the end ima lose it from everywhere anyway. |
AWESOME Liam! Keep it up and I'm sure the weight will leave your stomach area as well. You have done amazingly well in a very short time.

Hi all, todays weigh in came in at 17st 6lbs so that is another 7lbs in 11 days i think. Quite enjoying this diet as i don't have the mad munchie cravings. I even just walk past the cakes and choccy biscuits without batting an eyelid. so far so good.I am still sticking to between 16/20g of carbs a day and i was wondering should i go to phase 2 or just carry on as I am? Clothes are starting to get a wee bit baggyhttp://www.lowcarbsite.com/images/sm...icon_smile.gif. I need to do more exercise though. The treadmill has been used sparingly but when i go on i try and fast walk for an hour each time at 7kph but thats probably only twice a week . Hope everyone else is having a good week.
