Default What to do - No Carbs or No Fat
I have been looking for some diet to help me with my Type II diabetes. I read Atkins and it says get rid of Carbs, they are the thing that drive up your glucose levels. Then I read Dr. Barnhard and he says, go vegan and get rid of the fat that clogs up your cells so they can't use the glucose.

Where do I go?

"Where do I go?"

To your doctor... and then to a good nutritionist who specializes in diabetic diets.

Here's a link to the ADA's page on nutrition to give you an idea of how they will tell you to eat.

Good luck...

I was expecting you to say, go Atkins. I have been trying to do the ADA diet, but it does not seem to change anything. The Atkins advocates say that following his diet can get me off all the medications.

What is your view?

My opinion? Well... You said you're a Type 2 Diabetic, you're on meds and the ADA diet didn't "change anything". Do you take insulin? What did you think the diet would "change"? How long have you known you were diabetic? How long did you stay on the ADA diet? How much weight did you lose? Do you exercise every day?

From what I've read about diabetes... once ya got it, ya got it. You can control it, but you can't "fix" it. Losing weight plus controlling your bs levels with diet/drugs/exercise will reduce the amount of medication needed. But go off the diet, gain weight and bam... still a diabetic. I would be more concerned about controlling my bs than getting off medications... a controlled carbohydrate diet is a GREAT tool for managing glucose because it limits the glucose your body can produce from food. If I were a diabetic, I'd be counting carbs for sure... plus paying attention to things like fiber and fat, since they slow down digestion and absorbtion.

Also... there's a word you used: try. You've been "trying" to do the ADA diet. Well, you asked for my opinion so I'll give you one on this, too... there are times in life when "trying" simply isn't enough. This is one of them. As Yoda said, "There is no try. Only do, and not do." As a diabetic, you can't try to eat right... YOU have to eat right. Your life literally depends on it.

Excellent response by Tril... as always!

Fblair, as Tril said, keeping your blood sugars under the tightest control is exactly what I would focus on if I were diagnosed with diabetes. As long as you do that, you aren't accumulating the bad effects of diabetes. It doesn't mean you don't have diabetes, it means you are effectively staving off it's progression.

You could try Atkins **as long as you have no evidence of kidney damage**. Alternately, you could try South Beach, which is a controlled carb diet (vs Atkins low carb). SB is also very similar to the mediterranean diet, which is highly recommended by cardiologists.

Hope this helps. It's very confusing trying to put a lot of this information together, but I'm glad you're making the effort. It will pay off!
