Not really sure where this should go (which forum). But here's a link to an article on trans fats. We talk about those a lot here. This really describes what they are, why we should avoid it and how much is considered safe (not much!).
http://www.ars.usda.gov/News/docs.htm?docid=16212 FYI, they're now saying that the limit on trans fats should be 0.5% of your daily intake. For a 2000 calorie a day diet, that's about 1 gram of trans fats... a day. Since manufacturers can label their products that have less than 1/2 gram per serving (could be 0.499) as ZERO grams, it's scary how fast we could easily go over 1 gram. Studies show that damage results at 2 g per day. Not a lot of leeway there folks. Please read this article if you're not convinced yet that you need to avoid trans fats. Tril |

One thing you should also be doing is reading the ingredient list. If the nutrition label says 0 grams of trans fats, but the ingredient list contains partially hydrogenated vegetable oil... then there IS trans fat in the food. It's just that the serving size has been made small enough to get the trans fat under 0.5 g so they can put ZERO.
Think about ridiculously small serving sizes for stuff like Cool Whip. Two tbs... level tbs. Have you ever seen how little that is? You can barely SEE it, let alone TASTE it. LOL No one eats just 2 tbs and calls it a serving. When was the last time you got 25 servings from one regular sized Cool Whip container? Imagine having 20 people for dinner and thinking one tub of Cool Whip would be enough for everyone there with some left over. Ya, right. Anyway, read the ingredient list as well as the nutrition label. Use your common sense... and be an informed consumer. Another example of this "deception" is the spray oil in a can... PAM. They say 0 calories, 0 g fat, right?? Uh... c'mon, how can that be when the ONLY ingredient on the can is OIL??? I need a V-8 smiley. ![]() Tril |
