Bran

Hi. Can you tell me what the opinion is of bran? If you read the packet it states quite high carbs. But years ago, I was told it is "unavailable carbs" as we cannot digest it. It would be handy to know as I could add it to things if so.

Hey Miffin, I occassionally have some Bran with Alpro Soy Light to keep the carbs down.

I have found that Dr Vogels Ultra Bran has the best (lowest) net carb count when compared to regular bran such as Kellogs All-Bran and supermarket own label bran whom all tend to add sugar.

Its very different from normal bran but it is delicious.

I very much doubt it could be used in any other capacity other than "sparingly" due to it 4.5g net carbs for every 45g consumed. So I guess this rules it out of practically all stages of Atkins, but I could be wrong, I'm no expert.

You can pick it up from Holland and Barrett, and some Tescos (check online). I used to be able to get it from Sainsburies, but they've stopped stocking it now, its quite difficult to get hold of.

Cheers

If it's just bran (the actual bran part of the wheat grain) then it's just fiber. If it's a bran CEREAL, then it's not... you can tell the difference by reading the ingrediet list. If it says "wheat bran" and nothing else, AND the fiber count equals the carb count, then you can add it to stuff for the fiber.... if there are other ingredients it's not the same thing.

Whole grains are the last rung of the carb ladder and are added when you're basically in maintenance.

No, this is proper wheat bran from Holland and Barrett. The carb content is 26 but the fibre is 36. But as this is Britain I doubt if this is as good news as it would be if you are in USA.

Brian... I looked up H&B online. They only showed that they sold wheat germ OIL capsules and wheat germ massage oil. Since I don't think you're eating either of these http://www.lowcarbsite.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif what are you eating? Is it a dry product? Do you stir it into a drink??

Hi Tril. It states "Natural Wheat Bran" That is the only ingredient in it. It is a dry product. It says "baking" on the label. It also says "up to 2 tablespoons a day, on cereal or in stews or casseroles."

Ah, it does not tell you that. But it's a massive bag of 750grams. So my estimate would be about 10 grams of weight so about 2.6 carbs and 3.6 fibre for 2 tablespoons.

I went online and found the carb/fiber count for wheat bran...there were different counts based on the brand name, but each TBS had an average of 1.5 net grams of carb. That's about what you figured yours was (3 net grams per 2 TBS serving).

Thanks for that research. I guess it is ok to use a bit of that then.

It's okay... just be sure to count the net carbs. In Induction, that's a lot for just bran, though... to me anyway. You only have 5 to 8 carbs to "play with" so using 3 of them on bran would make me think twice. I'd much prefer to get my fiber from my veggies!
