Default help with bmi
I am 6 feet tall and weigh 214#s. My BMI is 29.03. That puts me in the upper overweight catagory. I have been using 184#s as a long term goal for the is my upper healthy weight on the BMI index. I can now feel my ribs and breast bone distinctly. I have gone from a size 44 to a loose 38. If I lose another 30#s I will be as skinny as a rail. Is there some factor I am missing. My starting weight was 260.

If you are muscular, that will make the BMI "off". Here is what one site says about it...

"Part 1: Assessing Your Risk
According to the NHLBI guidelines, assessment of overweight involves using three key measures:

body mass index (BMI)

waist circumference, and

risk factors for diseases and conditions associated with obesity.
The BMI is a measure of your weight relative to your height and waist circumference measures abdominal fat. Combining these with information about your additional risk factors yields your risk for developing obesity-associated diseases.

What is Your Risk?
1. Body Mass Index (BMI)
BMI is a reliable indicator of total body fat, which is related to the risk of disease and death. The score is valid for both men and women but it does have some limits. The limits are:

It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build.
It may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle mass. "

A 38" waist isn't exactly skinny, though... where do you carry your weight?

I also found this on waist measurements:

"A waist measurement of 40 inches or more is dangerous for men (37 inches or less is best)."

Maybe you should aim for a 34 - 36" waist and ignore the BMI numbers for now.

Thanks Tril.

I just started to fit into 36" pants today. Slightly tight but wonderful.

Thank you again.
