The more I read the book and the more I research the diet on the internet, the more I'm understanding my headaches, aches and pains, sleeplessness etc.

I saw my doctor yesterday who thought Atkins was the same as Cambridge so was dead against it. He thumbed throught the book and saw it was not in the least so agreed to let me have a go.

This is not going to be a diet for me. When I knocked that book off the shelf by accident, I think it was fate guiding me. 'Chang your life style Dink before its too late!' I'm in this for life.

Just afew more chapters and I'll be ready to start. Shopping list, more or less done.

Hey there and welcome aboard and starting the atkins diet. You will feel better and you will lose weight. Don't forget to take your measurements..

I hope I can join you because this seems such a friendly thread. I’ll tell you a bit about me, and then you can see for yourselves that I’m going to need a lot of support and advice.
I am 58 married with a grown up daughter. I have been overweight all my adult life and have tried every diet known to man. Yes, I lose weight but as soon as I start eating again it piles back on. I have become so philosophical about this happening that I have 2 sets of clothes: Fat clothes and thin clothes!
Last year I did the Cambridge diet and the weight dropped off me. In a year I managed to lose 5 stones (70lbs) I was having to buy the formula for me at over £30 a week, plus food for my family. When I slowed up with the loss to just 2lbs a week, it seemed an awful lot of money to pay. I came off it and the weight piled back on rapidly. I regained the 5 stones plus another 14lbs.
I am at my lowest ebb and quite honestly, have decided to resign myself to always being fat.
Yesterday I was in a Charity Shop (your Thrift or Good Will I think) and knocked a book off the shelf by mistake. I bent to pick it up and it was ‘Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution’ costing only 90p! I brought it home and I am gradually working through it. It has been like a window opening on a whole new world for me. I’m not jumping into it, I want to read and understand it before I start so I’ve given myself 2 weeks to read it from cover to cover, and get myself into the right mind set.
I have, through being over weight, become very achy in my joints and from the little I’ve read so far, I think as I settle on the new diet, my general health will greatly improve.
I feel that instead of sinking into frumpish old age I now have the ability within me to achieve something I thought was unachievable.
It’s a big book and I’m taking it slowly so have patience with me! And please let me join in.

THIS, in one simple sentence, explains everything. If you decide to "try" Atkins, make it more than a weight loss diet. There is no going back... there is no "eating again". If it takes giving up sugar, potatoes and bread to lose the weight then it takes giving up sugar, potatoes and bread to keep it off. It's really, honestly, that simple. The reason liquid diets don't work in the long term is that you can't sustain that eating style forever. So don't bother with them. If you think that you can eat the Atkins way for LIFE... then do it. If you can't, find another diet that you can live with forever. Because once you start... there is no stopping.

Welcome! Of course you can join us! Be sure to post regularly because it does indeed help. Tril's right though, Atkins is a way of life. You do get to add some occasional grains and fruit back in when you are ready to maintain your weight but you'll never again be able to regularly eat sweets or potatoes, etc.

Many thanks for the welcome. Yes, it isn't a diet really is it? It is a whole new life style and that is why I'm reading the book and getting to grips with it. I shall miss milk very much, but there are substitutes. Well, it is 8.45pm here and we are in the middle of the grand-daddy of all storms so I shall say goodnight and talk to you tomorrow... No prizes for guessing my reading matter in bed tonight!

Hi there dinky from the UK. I read your thread and welcome. I have to agree with Tril, what most people tend to forget is that the atkins diet is a lifestyle change. Once you lose the weight and if you go back to your old ways of eating you will gain the weight back. I'm not saying that you can never have milk or baked potato, but you can't have it everyday. If you stick with atkins and exercise or do some physical activity the weight will come off.

good luck and hang in there. If you start my advice would be to take your measurements and keep track of that. I've put my scale away and have decided to go by my measurements and how my clothes fit. The scale and play tricks on you when you think you aren't losing when you are with inches..

You've never said a truer word morenachica. I've fallen into that trap before now... jumping on and off the scales. This is going to be a new life for me when I'm going to feel healthier and happier than ever before, weight loss is just a happy coincidence.
The more I read, the more I realize that my aches and pains are probably cause more by diet than anything else. I'm seeing my doctor (book in hand) on Friday.
My husband has started thumbing through the book and is making noises about joining me in my new life style. That would be great.
I've had a look at the members list and there's a few of us Brits on here so we'll probably meet up sooner or later.

Yes Dinky the scale and be a great motivator and di-motivator. I've learned my lesson when I jumped on the scale and saw a 6 pound lost then a 6 pound gain. I learned that going by your inches is probably the thing to do because let's face it we want to see that scale go down and if it isn't it can be a big discouragement and its better for someone like me to just go by my clothes and inches. I battled with binging and purging, I was bulminc for a few years and over came. It was more of a mental thing and I had to change my lifestyle.

I'm happy that you have made the choice for a healthier lifestyle. Not only will you look great but feel great.

By the way I'm american I just live in Italy. I've lived all over turkey, mexico and europe..

I'm half Welsh and the rest of me is like the league of nations: I have German, Irish, English, and a bit of French blood in me, but I was brought up in Britain.

Yes you are so right, what a downer it is when the scales don't move and after all, we buy our clothes by the inches don't we, not our weight!

Congratulations on overcoming the eating disorder It must have been a long, bumpy and kind of lonely road

hey you sound like most of us americans, I have native american, dominican, english,african and spanish blood in me so I guess we both are like the united nations.

yes infact we do buy our clothes based on iches and not weight. so that is what I'm focusing on. I put my scale away and as long as the clothes sizes keep dropping that is what I'm going by and not the weight..

Thks for the encouragement. It was a lonely road but I overcame it and I'm stronger than ever.
