Camp Food Ideas???
So 3 Atkins chicks went to the woods...
No it isn't the start to a joke. Well it very well could be if we don't figure out what is easy, portable, needs minimal refridgeration (Ice Chest) and is Atkin's friendly. Please help. All suggestions accepted! I'm begging... Nik |
Sugar free beef jerky. Celery sticks (should be fine in cooler). Canned tuna and chicken. (don't forget can opener! Been there, done that!) Okay, last but not least, the pre-cooked microwaveable bacon does not need refrigeration until it has been opened. It should crisp up nicely on a grill. HAVE FUN! I'm completely jealous.

OKay... girl, you asked the right person!!! I've been camping/hiking/snowmobiling low carb for years!!! Here are my suggestions, based on a weekend with 3 women, living out of a cooler... cooking on a propane stove (I'm assuming). I'll break it down by meals and snacks since that's how I do it when I'm planning...
B'fasts EGGS (scrambled, omelette, fried - there's 3 meals) Peppers/onions, can of chopped black olives, shredded cheese precooked b'fast meats like zero carb sausages, bacon coffee/tea (get both in "bags") Lunches tuna, sliced deli meats, sliced cheeses mayo, mustard head of large leafed lettuce for wrapping around "sandwich" type fillings diet soda veggies for filling like peppers, onion, tomato Dinners steaks, salad fixings, salad dressing burgers (for "burger in a bowl")* Snacks: cheese sticks pepperoni veggies like cucumbers, celery, radishes boiled eggs (do these at home, put in a ziplock with several paper towels) sf hot cocoa for late night around the fire mixed nuts Extras: cream Splenda tabs butter in a tub S&P diet sodas, bottled water, Crystal Light packets garlic powder paper towels paper plates, bowls, utensils kettle for boiling water frying pan mixing bowl mixing spoon spatula zip lock baggies in large and sandwich size napkins paper cups WATER ICE (get a block of ice for the cooler, it will last all weekend) * Burger in a bowl is just that... everything you'd put on a hamburger but the bun. I like to layer mine lettuce, tomato, burger, cheese, mustard, sf ketchup, sf relish. Have fun! |
uh, we do have a camp stove thingy, yes?
Cline! I am starting to panic! |
You guys are going to have SO MUCH FUN!!! http://www.lowcarbsite.com/images/sm...on_biggrin.gif Enjoy!!
|
Tril-you are my savior thanks!!!. I can basically print that list out!!! Love you! I'm trying to scrounge up a propane camp stove for us to use/borrow.
Steph-We'll be allright! It is called "roughing" it for a reason! Nik |
LOL... do you have a tent?? Have you ever set one up? If not, learn BEFORE you go how to set it up. It stinks if it's the first time and the bugs are biting and the rain is threatening and it's coming on DARK. http://www.lowcarbsite.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif Yeah... practice it. lol Oh... and bring a tarp to put UNDER the tent (fold in any excess that might hang out) so if it rains, you won't be floating inside the tent. Tucking in the extra with let the rain run into the ground and not make a puddle under your tent. If you're having a fire, situate the opening of the tent away from the fire so you don't fill it with smoke.
Bring pads to sleep on... or cheap air mattresses. The ground is cold and your bones will thank you. Don't forget flashlights... and extra batteries (headlamps are the BEST when camping/cooking in the dark). And toilet paper. And a first aid kit. http://www.lowcarbsite.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif Tril |
And a hotel room!

Really? Seriously?
Biting bugs? Cline.....do we know what we are doing? I am getting very panicky. Are bugs going to crawl all over me? DO WE EVEN HAVE A TENT? *breathes into paper bag* |
Hmmm. Psych check list...
Strait Jacket?.....check Sedative?.....check Ball Gag?.....check! Looks like we're golden! http://www.lowcarbsite.com/images/sm...on_biggrin.gif Chill Scott Chill. You are the only noob going on this trip. We shall overcome! Nik |
LMAO.
Well said. |
Trill's 100% right about that tarp. Want to protect your backside outside of the tent? Go back to Girl Scout days and make a sit-upon! (That's just whatever padding you need - newspapers, cushion, whatever inside a waterproof wrapping, usually a plastic bag) It protects your bum outside like the tarp does inside.
Deep Woods Off is usually good for buggies. DON'T spray it on the tent, it will make the tent leak, but do spray it on the lit part of the flashlights. Unless you have an advanced degree in arson or your deep-woods skills are still brand-new take a Coleman Stove and some infallible way of making fire if you are cooking out. 5:30 a.m. is no time to be standing over smoldering leaves singing, "Rise Up O Flame" Have a great time and I wish I was going with you! I dearly loved camping when I was single (as if you couldn't tell) but I married someone who thinks "roughing it" is when the hotel room doesn't have cable! |
