Hi All
First time poster, newby. I am in my 1st phase of the Atkins Diet. I am 8 days in and have seen dramatic results. I lost my control and under pressure ate what I approximate at 50-60 carbs today. I havnt slipped off the Diet as I am still keen to rectify the issue and keep eating less then 20g of carbs. But I am worries at what this lunch may have caused. Will this dramatically screw up my diet, will it remove me from ketosis? can someone please explain the consequences of my slip? |

cecomagus... first of all, welcome to our little corner of the low carb world. Glad you could join us!
![]() Second of all, life is like that. We go along doing just fine and WHAM!, upside the head. The difference between it unrailing you and not, is how you respond to it. It's not the end of the world if you just accept it happened, use the experience to learn how to avoid it happening in the future and you get up and keep going. I believe it's these "slips" and learning to recover that determine our long term success, i.e. maintenance. So it's good to learn along the way. As for consequences for a high carb "slip"... well, you'll just have to see how your body responds. In the end, nothing is permanent, you can always fix it. I see these "slips" as pauses (and once in a while a rewind) in weight loss. But you just keep going. One thing to consider, though, the more times you do it, the longer it will take to reach your goal... and the higher the risk that you won't reach it at all. Sometimes, when I'm tempted by something, I'll ask myself... Is this serving of _____ (fill in the blank, for you it would have been french fries) worth 2 days of weight loss time? Very often the answer is no and I move on. Hope this helps. |

Potato carbs are kinda bad, t hats for sure.
The root of this problem is the peer pressure however. I think above all we need to figure out why they were pressuring you, and how you can stop it. Everyone has their different reasons for being able to defeat both peer pressure and their own cravings. For myself, it's the knowledge that I've done this before, so I know its doable.... for the girl (obviously) and for ego. It's a challenge to successfully complete a diet... its not something everyone can do, as evidenced by merely examining the eating habits of others around you. For me, the ability to feel successful at something difficult is a big motivator. Next time your peers pressure you to eat something, just turn your nose up and chuckle at their inability to regulate their own cravings. Or if you don't want to do that, say this. "No I won't have those french fries, but if you're really worried that I'm not eating enough, I'll have that burger of yours too, thanks." Then grab it really quick and bite it before they can stop you. Oh, and ask them sarcastically if they're really trying to convince you that french fries are good for you. |

KypDurron - I like your reply with the sarcasm.
I had a quick check of my Ketosis level this morning and I am still in a mild state of Ketosis so I am ok. I havnt weighed myself this whole time. I wanted to wait till the end of 2 weeks. I started at 75kg (before you say anything, I know I am not overweight, but I am trying to tone up my body to be in shape and lose excess body fat that is not needed.) My Goal is to have abs, defined muscles and an overall good look by summer (starts december for us). I am quite active but a poor diet was holding me back. this atkins diet has provided me with a great change already and I estimate at least a 4-5kg loss already (estimate) I will know more in a few days when I weigh myself at the end of my 2 week period |
