EXcellent horn performance. I always considered horn playing a difficuilt task. For me not a big fan of the composers work.. old classical/baroque or traditionial harmonies etc guy .

I agree with Bill: the effects, echo etc, fit the work's title, but to me it's hardly music, I admit to only listening to the first 30 seconds or so, couldn't stand any more, sorry.

Beautiful playing and work - the French Horn probably being the most challenging brass instrument to play, and this artist has absolute control over his instrument.

Although Messiaen isn't everyone's cup of tea, I find his music very inspirational, especially the organ works.

Thanks for finding and sharing this, CD

Yep, Messiaen is not everyone's cup of Java, thats for sure, but to let one's mind loose so that it can begin to grasp the unfathomable - to reach for the boundaries of both the known and unknown Universe, and to let the virtuosic Horn playing in the submitted link be a vehicle in/for which to explore that which is unknown - I find it very tantalising. To make those whoops, howls, moans, and leaps on the Horn like the artist did - Whoweeee!!! Thats more than I can ever accomplish - It is artistry of the nth level........

@Kh: And the hornplayer made it seem so simple

Yes he did ... that kind of talent is only achieved with patience and diligent practice ...

I still love to listen to the organ works of Messiaen at home, in total darkness, and just let the sound carry my soul into complete calmness.

Kh,

Do you have the complete organ works of Messiaen played by Olivier Latry at Notre-Dame de Paris? Latry so totally understands Messiaen........

So, now I'll begin to ponder upon Messiaen's Cosmical Musical Language whilst listening to his other works - I have heretofore not done so.

My set of 5 CD's are of Jennifer Bate, Naji Hakim, Jon Gillock, Louis Thiry, and Thomas Schlee, (Jade label), recorded at Trinity Parish, Paris, during Lent in 1995 on the organ Messiaen presided over for over 60 years in Paris.

Oh yes, I gave that one away to a budding Messiaen enthusiast back in the year 2000...I missed that one quite alot and then I bought Latry's survey and I was blown away........
