the teams we follow
 

i support coventry city,over the years i must have been to thousands of games supporting them.covering alot of stadiums around england,ranging from london to the south west to the north west and across to the north east..then theres the farmlands of east anglia.

now i wasn't born in coventry but in the city of gloucester some 60 miles away,but i've lived in coventry for 45 years,its all i remember because i was 5 when we moved here...i have a link to this city and because of that its my home town,so i support the local team regardless of any success..i also pay an interest in the surrounding areas teams who are all none league,such as nuneaton,bedworth and rugby

my thoughts are that you should follow the team of the city where you come from,wheres the pride if a team you claim to support but have never seen live actually achieves something if you have no link to the place or have never seen them play live?...claiming to support a side thats 200 miles north of your hometown doesn't wash with me anyway

i'll always follow my team because trophy's dont matter in the long run....its the love of the club that counts most...i mean,i saw my first game in 1970 and when i die i'll be buried wearing sky blue

I believe coming from the same place of your team does help a lot, because generally speaking locals know the club better in my experience. Being from Manchester myself I'm a Man United fan, now it's no secret opposition fans like to make the not from Manchester dig and while it's true of some fans (we have a huge following in Ireland for example) it's not really exclusive of our club, it's mainly the Premier League clubs who have the followers from other parts. Take a trip to Old Trafford though and you will see the majority of fans are actually from the surrounding areas, and this is certainly the case for the away fans. Harping back to the history thing, there is various facts that if you're going to follow a club, there's just some things you really have to know. Call me a nerd if you wish, but I could reel off the 99 Champions League final starting 11, the players who unfortunately lost their lives in the Munich Air Disaster and the reason why Manchester United are called the Red Devils. On the tragedy thing I will say any fan of any club who makes fun of an opposition club's tragedies for 'banter' purposes really should be ashamed. It's not just us, it's Liverpool with Hillsborough. I also think success isn't the be all and end all. Sure it's great when you win things but if you don't it's not the end of the world. And it certainly shoudn't be a measuring stick of why you choose to support a club because you could end up hating your club because they aren't winning anything. It does hurt when your rivals are winning Titles you wish your team was winning, but life goes on.

i could actually tell you that when we were relegated from the premiership 10 years or so ago it was the first time we'd actually been relegated from any division...not bad for a club founded in 1883

TBH, I used to support Chelsea, up until '77 FA Cup final (Please check that the team I support now, did lose that final). Being from London, I could of supported any team, but for the an Aunt of mine

There's a funny story associated with that cup final. Back then they used to give this little shield to the player who scored the winner in the Cup final, and Lou Macari thought he scored it. However the ball went in last off Jimmy Greenhoff and he had obviously scored the winner. In the dressing room afterwards Macari's looking for this shield and Jimmy walks in with it and tells him he scored the winner.

Switching from Chelsea to Liverpool in the late 70's is like switching from Liverpool to Chelsea now.

Hmmm...I might have to disagree with you. Hockey is my passion but I have never supported the home team. I have never lived in Calgary and have no connection to the city other than the fact that my favourite hockey team plays there. I don't think that makes me any less of a fan than the locals.
