Default Remind me please
Remind me please why I wanted an APBT in the first place. The more and more I look at other breeds, the more and more I feel myself pull away from this breed. I've put so much effort, research, and tears into this breed, and now it feels like it was all for nothing honestly. I love the breed, I really do....but I'm starting to think American Bulldogs are where my heart is really at.

So some one please remind me again why I need this breed, and that I haven't wasted all the years I've put into the breed.

Hmm not sure what's going on, or your original reasons for wanting an APBT. What happened?

I don't really get breed preferences. I like dogs based on individual dogs' personalities. I know I like big dogs, but that's about it. All I wanted when I adopted a dog was a medium-to-big dog who was active but not crazily so, was very smart, and had a lot of personality. That's what I got.

hmm, i think that you should go with what breed fits your lifestyle. it is good to be interested in many breeds and even better to gain knowledge in breeds you are interested in. just because you feel more drawn to a different breed doesn't mean what you have learned is for nothing or even should affect what breed you do end up getting.

Me too.. I have always loved them... Will definitely be my next dog (if hubby allows I promised him he can have his husky when we get our next dog since that's what he always wanted.. I think they are beautiful but definitely not my kind of dog... I try to tell him things about the breed (husky) and why I don't think it's a fit for him... His answer is "i don't know anything about them, I just always liked how they look" (not the appropriate answer lol) so I am pretty sure I will get one some day

Well its not like youre only allowed to like 1 breed at a time lol. Just because you love ABs doesnt mean you have to start denying your love of APBTs.

If you just started getting interested in ABs, don't rush to getting one. I have always been an APBT girl but about a year ago got interested in german shepherds. Almost got one but waited and ended up getting another APBT recently. vERY happy I went with what I have always loved, dont buy on impulse

I was the same way about Beagles. Loved them, put loads of research into the breed, knew what I wanted and ended up with Buddy the Beagle mix. Ten years later, I have very different feelings about not only Beagles but hounds in general. Now I would like to stay far away from hounds. The only hounds I really like anymore are sighthounds, but doubt I would get one in the near future.

Sometimes things just change. There's nothing wrong with that. And who says you can't love the APBT as well as another breed equally? I mean, I can't decide between the Boxer, Dobe, and JRT for my next dog, I adore all of them equally. I've also been eyeing Bulldogs... How can you not love them, right?

Meh, tastes change. Just because you don't actively want to own an APBT anymore, doesn't mean all you learned was a waste. The way I see it, information is never a waste. The more you learn, the better.

well maybe down the road the apbt may end up in your life, maybe not, but i don't see why just because you don't want one now means you won't want one in the future... and even if you don't get one , it doesn't matter you're breed of choice is whatever makes you happy... A few years ago i considered the possibility of me owning a gsd, but they aren't the dog for me, and i don't think i will ever own one. But they are beautiful dogs, and i still like to learn about them... Just not what is for me

I get you, Muttkip. My first 'love' in dog breeds were german shepherds and goldens. I thought for sure I was going to have a golden when I first moved out and was ready to add a second dog. I was absolutely obsessed with them.

Then Gypsy came.

I think you can just see that a certain breed matches your personality and your lifestyle more than any other. And maybe you found the perfect fit in american bulldogs.

I've owned several breeds and breed mixes, and I think I will always go back to APBT's and mixes thereof. Their personalities and temperaments and everything about them just....flow with me.

I think its nice to find that perfect breed. And there is nothing wrong with the fact that pit bulls may not be that for you.

I think some times too this breed just wears you out. Your constantly having to deal with discrimination, educating, dumb ass', and everything else.

I thought just today after arguing for this breed on a fb group (about a little girl who got attacked by the family bully type dog) why even bother when no one is going to stop their way of thinking.

Then there is the stress of having a high energy dog that could be extremely dog aggressive. I can defiantly see where this breed would turn people away.
Maybe after years of research and knowing how the breed is you want something easier.

If you don't mind, why do you feel like this? Is it what Ali mentioned?

Nice to see another sighthound/bull breed combo household! They really do mesh so well

(and what a stunning whippet!)

It's mostly the latter of the two. The worn out by idiots, and the divide in this breed has worn me out, there is so much drama with the APBT. I love the breed so much, I've put in so many tears for this breed it's not even funny. But it's mostly the drama and the politics I'm just sick of. They are the PERFECT breed for me, but again I just am so worn down.

The high energy and dog aggression I can deal with, almost all my dogs of some degree of DA and it that doesn't bother me. It's not the dogs, it's the people. That why I started looking at other breeds, you don't see all this in the Labrador breed or from what I've found so far with the American Bulldog.

That's why I picking the AB over the APBT....I still get the high energy working dog, but the breed has something else my boyfriend wants, the guarding traits along with the larger size. So the AB is a better fit for the BOTH of us. I get my Bulldog and he gets his big guard dog for when he's on 48 hours shifts at the fire station he doesn't have to worry about my safety with the AB and a loaded gun.

Maybe one day, I'll come back to the APBT, but for now the spark just ins't there anymore. I'm still sticking around PBC, because this place is like my second home and we love AB's.

Hopefully that made sense......and maybe one day I'll have my APBT....maybe.......

Very good response CLiff!!

I never thought I would want a big dog...which is part of the reason why I wound up with a pit bull.

And while I love the medium sized, short coated, non-drooly pit bull...I have
recently found myself fantasizing about large, short coated, dry mouthed Dogos.

But who's to say what I'll end up with when I'm ready for another dog...hopefully there'll be a lot of years between now and then (because I don't see Veronica comfortably sharing space with another dog ).

Maybe by then I'll be so old that all I feel up to is carrying around a Chinese Crested with a mowhawk in my purse.

well I can totally relate, I love this breed so much, heck I own 2 mutts. But after dealing with Logan's I must bark because I can bark and your by the freezer (no matter the time, rain/shine, bark collar...anything) I wonder why I want something with more drive...I think my next dog will probably be a great dane or mastiff...I love this breed and probably will not go long without one in the house but I think there is room for diversity and even if you love them that doesn't mean you have to own one

Thank you! She turned one today! I am pretty fond of her. If you think that the pit bulls are high drive, own a young whippet. They are like dragons on crack! I have never met a dog with more focused drive than the pit-mutt next to her, but he's super-easy to live with. Not the whippet. Like Teal said, they are a pretty easy combination. The hounds have nothing to prove, so the don't seem to piss off spicey dogs.

I understand leaving the pit bull type dogs. I have owned four. Two have passed away. I love them madly, but the dog aggression and the drama from the public can be challenging. My husband took a job trasfer to a town that was trying to enact BSL. We weren't sure what we were going to do. The measures ended up failing, but it was stressful. I always SAY that I will never get another, but I probably will. They are so easy to train and they compete with their whole hearts. They are so expressive and hilarious. I love the short coats and their builds. They are so, so easy to live with.

I watch my whippet friends stuff 3 dogs into a single crate and turn a dozen of them loose at a time in big yard and I just shake my head. In some ways, that would be so, so nice! But, there's something about the pit-mutts that I just can't leave behind.

I get what you're saying. I think the drama wears ALL of us down sometimes. Lately Sam has been wearing me out too.. Ive been way too tired to work her out so shes only been getting one walk at night.. But its not enough and she's been acting like a crazy fool! Its exhasting. But then she snuggles up in bed with me and spoons with me all night and I remember why it's all worth it
