Default what was the strongest reaction....
..when you told someone you like/have pit-bulls?

I told my grandmother that I liked pitbulls, and she flinched back and made a gasping sound. She then asked, with a shocked/disgusted look on her face, why on earth would I like "those things?!" I was quick to try and correct her, but she wasnt hearing it.

how about you? Any weird reactions to your breed of choice?

My grandmother pretty much had the same reaction.

I showed her a picture of Trooper smiling (he was lying down and I used my thumb and forefinger to part his lips) and she pulled a face, flinched and shook her head. Made some comments I'm sure...but then! She came and stayed with me for about a week, wouldn't you know it-Trooper slept with her every.single.night.

The other crazy reaction that always comes to mind for me was being in a pet store with our girl Bailey. We were walking by a set up for cat adoptions and Bailey was investigating. My husband and I were on one side of the table, and so was another lady who asked to pet Bailey. She then asked her sister/friend (who was standing on the other side of the table) if she wanted to pet Bailey.

And the lady said-not unless I have a .38 in my other hand.

I was flabbergasted!

I think the worst was "are you sure?" because I had at the time an 18 month old son, when I said what dog we had just bought. Not one person didnt give him a chance to just be a dog though and hes now won the hearts of every single person who had an unsure comment about what type of dog we got. My family has some annoying sides but not giving a dog a chance just because of their looks isnt one of them. I believe my mom, uncle, MIL, and GMIL were all the ones who questioned it and my mom was pratically in tears when we found Harley nearly dead after a bee sting. My uncle spends more time with my dog than his own when we all go to the desert because "hes just so awesome" my MIL (and my mom) call Harley their 3rd grandson and GMIL who claims she was attacked by pit bulls even trys to pet him and was impressed that he listened to her when she told him to sit (and she put her hand out in the way I do for the 'touch' command so he jumped up to touch her hand with his nose lol).

Mine would be with my lady. When I mentioned I wanted a pit pup she said "nope not around my kids u ain't" and when I got Tuck she was like "hell no, he staying in the back yard fuck that!". Now she's ok with him since he doesn't even bother with her lol.

And on the flip side when I mentioned getting a new pup she was so against it an said she's tired of dogs pits especially, but um actions speak louder especially when "gemini blue" is sleeping on her arm under the blanket as I'm typing this lol.

never had anyone say anything to me but we heard it from my mom and his mom about others say things. my grandma was very worried from the beginning and doesn't like pits at all. but she has come around after meeting her and seeing that she is a very good puppy. his mom said her coworkers were very taken back that we were keeping her and said the stereotypical things about pits.

everyone wants to come and pet her but i think part of that has to do with that she has some lab in her so not everyone notices the pit right away.

My mom absolutely HATED pit bulls and would always try to argue it with me that they were horrible dogs and they would turn on their owners. That was until I got Izzy and she joined a pit bull forum I was also on, now god forbid you ever say anything bad about them she will rip you a new one and has pictures on her fb about them.
I guess it helped that she also got a English bull terrier (who before she would deny had apbt in them).

My nana was the same way she thought Izzy was going to grow up to kill me and now Izzy is her favorite (and vis versa Izzy goes ape shit when she sees her). Izzy is generally the only big dog invited in her house and she always says how much of a good girl she is. I think she would proudly wear something saying she is her grandma.

I had an older lady tell me, "the only thing i know about put bulls is they maul peoples faces off." I nicely said, that's a common misconception, but put bulls are very sweet and well behaved when brought up correctly. By the end of the evening she WA petting and complimenting her on her manners.

My grandparents... I only told them that Roxie is a Whippet mix, which she is, idk what else is in her- could be Boxer, pit bull, lab, who knows- but they are convinced now that they've seen what she looks like that she will turn on me and kill my sisters. Dunno why they think she will only kill them, lol. They've met her though and think she is very sweet and well trained, but because she has those tiger stripes, she must be half wild or something (lol) and will therefore end up turning into a carnivorous animal one day and eating everyone.

People are just wired wrong, some of them.

I just usually get the "Why on earth would you own a pit bull" or the "wow, you don't strike me as the pit bull type." Most people assume I must be crazy. It's funny though because Amy is seriously the sweetest, snuggliest dog in the world.

My mom told me to be careful because they can "snap" but then my mom met her and fell in love. She went home and sent the dog a care package full of bully sticks and dried pig ears. Nobody who has ever met Amy can resist her charms.

Lol thank you!
Unfortunately my nice camera broke but I do try to get some with my phone.
I'll be sure to try and get more of her when she goes out.

My father was the most extreme reactor. He was on the phone with me and when I told him he yelled so loud he almost deafened me. Told me I was psychotic and that he had no idea why I "liked to play with fire".
He came around mostly but he still makes snide remarks about if I ever visit how Slayer will eat his dogs.

I feel bad for you guys. Most of my friends have some variation of pit bull mutts. I'm honestly surprised when people don't.

My parents did tell me I was crazy and the "are you sure about your decision?" while I was making it clear, that I am falling for the breed and I am going to bring one home. They weren't anti pit bull before, but they weren't really in love with the idea of one becoming my next dog either.
Now, the aunt which I am closest with, is one big sissy when it comes to bigger dogs. When I told her I now have a pit bull, she replied "OMG you are freaking out of your mind!! those dogs will snap one day! ".

My parents and family love the breed, my grandparents and great grandparents raised them. The only people I've ever gotten negative reactions from is one of my friends who flipped the hell out about me having a dog who would eventually "snap" and kill my children and other dogs.

My FIL is not a pet person. He just doesn't believe in animals as pets or being let live in the house. He's in his 80's and grew up in a rural area with the belief that if you had animals they were food and nothing more.

He wasn't thrilled to hear we had a dog and it lived in the house. He was even less thrilled that we got a 2nd dog. When he came to visit and my son was talking about our wonderful dogs my boy also happened to mention that one was a Pit Bull. So, my FIL blew up and said he was not speaking to us again until that dog was gone. When I pointed out the fact that he is an old man and how horrible it would be if he died and the last things he said to his son and grandson were in anger over a dog he decided that he would still speak to us, but never come to our home again when he was in state visiting.

After 3 years he did end up coming to our home. The FIL and MIL are not in great health anymore and their visit this past month was their last trip up. They came to the house for a few hours, but the dogs had to be crated for the visit.

When I adopted Boomer my BIL said that he could not bring his son (my nephew) over to my house because I "went and got a pit bull". Granted he really is not a dog person. Now three years into it my BIL loves my dog and my nephew adores my mutt. Boomer has completely changed his mind. No luck with my MIL though she does not like pets (any pets) at all.

At school there are designated smoking areas. One of these smoking areas I made into my “office”, it’s nice to be able to read/type and smoke at the same time.
This woman would always come join me for a smoke. We had many conversations about various topics ranging from how we agree that smoking in a car with children should be illegal to everyday things in our lives.
I honestly had no idea who this woman was. All I knew was that she worked at the energy institute on campus. Thursday I brought up the subject of a pet photo contest my school was running. I told this woman I wanted to enter it. She asked me what kind of dog I had and I told her. Then her exact words were “Aren’t you worried about that breed of dog being around your child?”
I found out this woman is a law professor at my law school. Very discouraging.
I spent the rest of my break in between classes trying to educate her. I know she was thinking “why is this student trying to teach me something, I already know everything I am awesome”. LOL

I adopted my first pitbull who was 12 years old and my parents were fine with her because she was old and slow (but my aunt woudn`t let me bring her when I was visiting and staying at her house because she didn`t want her puppy to get harrassed by a pitbull). 2 years later she passed away and I got a new one who was 2 years old. My mom said that I was going to get myself killed if i kept playing with pitbulls. Now when my parents come to visit they let the pitbulls sleep in the bed, and my mom refers to one of them as her dog. I also get a phone call from my mom a few times a week and she always tells asks me if Kali misses her and asks me to tell Kali that she loves her.
