Soo if I am understanding the site right, if he has to have that surgery he will squat to pee like a girl?
Well the opening would be similar but he may or may not still lift his leg.

That sucks! You'd think there would be wording in the 10 day stray hold law to allow for emergency vet work to be done. Our state has a 4 day stray hold. On the one hand you can get medical care sooner if needed, on the other hand it allows shelters to euthanize earlier, possibly before an owner can be found.
See the AC could have euth'd him on intake due to his injury. And would have due to breed. However if he was not able to urinate we would have done surgery when he came in. That would have been emergent. At the time all we needed to do to stabilize him was replace the penis and put him on antibiotics. And that is the law. I am doing all the nursing care. We sedated him and cleaned the wound.

Youch. Poor fella.

Cynthia - you are awesome for fostering yet another pup!
I am a sucker at times. LOL

I get calls a lot for dogs. But I will not take an owner surrender. And the majority of the calls I receive are owner surrenders. But I will not turn away situations like this. I have already contacted the rescue that Junkyard went to in hopes of getting this boy in if the owner does not come forward. I do not trust many rescues but this one I do 100%.

The infection has already set in. The dead tissue will slough off. He was a stray so all we really can legally do is stablize him. At least until the 10 day stray hold is up. The prepuce will act as a bandage. And you have to replace the penis. You can not leave it out.

Wait wait wait... If you had to amputate how would that work for using the bathroom and what not?

On a higher note he is adorable and I am really glad everything is going better for him

Sorry, Cynthia, didn't mean to imply that this would fix it now, just in case others had this happen.
Julie K
Lol no worries!

You are correct. You can try sugar. And yes sometimes it is due to, to small of an opening.

how old is he if you were to guess his age????

do you think maybe he was bred recently before you found him? ive heard of dogs penis's prolapsing after mating. its rare but it does happen and most often thats the reasons for it happening.

This is called paraphimosis and it is a medical emergency. A vet recommended pouring sugar (water) on it to get it to go down, but you will have to have the opening surgically enlarged.

He is around 9 months to a year old. Not sure about the breeding. I got him out of the bushes. Have no history.

And no all a male dog needs to have is an erection and this can happen.

He is out chillin with me now. Took him outside and his temp is down to 102.6 and he is eating and drinking on his own now. So thankful for that.

he looks pretty well fed and taken care of.. I wonder if he got out of a yard to run after a girl and then... voila! Poor dude.
We had a Boxer come in at one point. His penis was also necrotic looking (some really dark areas), but he recovered just fine. Took about 3 - 4 weeks to look all normal again. We actually thought we'd potentially do some debridement as well... but no need. Resilient thing, the penis is.
Lol yes it is. I took the purse string out last night. I had to. When he was urinating it was staying in the prepuce and only dripping out. I had to milk it out. The penis is staying in and he is urinating better.

Cant really tell in the pic. He is skinny and no muscle mass at all. Not sure how long he was out. I reported him to 2 county ACs due to the location of my hospital. I hope it is a story of he got out and is a well taken care of dog.

He had necrotic holes in his penis. But when I removed the purse strings and pulled the penis out it looked SOOOO much better. And that was only 1 day. Also I saw it today when he defecated and it looks good.

Eeeeck! That sounds horrible! Poor guy.

Hope he does well and doesn't have to get a penis amputation. I don't have a penis and that makes my stomach hurt lol
