Have you thought about contacting rental agencies and having an agent find you a rental home in your price range that does allow your dog? My husband and I were trying to move to Missouri from Michigan a few years ago. We Googled rental agencies, spoke with a few agents over the phone, gave them our price limit, number of bedrooms and bathrooms we needed, time limit, and explained we would need a landlord that allowed our dogs. We had a few housing options emailed to us with photo's within hours.

If you already have employment in your new state, Google a map of the surrounding areas. Then Google newspapers in that area. Check the newspapers for rental homes and look for available properties that suit your needs. Make calls to landlords. Also check out Craigslist in the new area for rentals available, too.

If that fails, then I am sorry for you and your dog, but failing a responsible home or a great rescue with an opening I would agree with putting the dog down.

THIS!

....and you should be able to find a home that allows your dog, you may have to pay a little more but that is what comes with owning a dog.

Its a sucky situtation but im sure if you look hard enough you'll find something. Once I came home from work with a note on the door that I had 7 days to rehome my dog or get out. By the 6th day we was out, sorry but my dog is like my kids and they aren't going anywhere that Im not!!

Great advice!

That's all very nice Jamie...but rescues rarely accept owner surrenders. She could call every rescue in the country and find very, very few (if any) ethical, good rescues that will take in an owner surrender.

Well that blows! I feel bad but seriously when there is a will there is a way! Try harder! Find a place that will allow him! That's like saying u can only find a one bedroom so u gotta give your kid away! Smh. Sorry if it's harsh. But damn I'd live in my truck before I'd give one of my dogs up to anyone! I hope you find a place that u can keep him!

Oriesssedleli419 01-09-2012 03:27 AM

i had that problem a while back. some places had 20# pet limits and others were only for cats. i got lucky when i found a place on cragslist that was open to all pets. i put down i had a american bull terrier(took the pit out) and they accepted it. if they had problems with it after i signed the contract, i could have sued them for doing so for voiding my contract. well the apatment worked out great to say the least. i walked him every day, but i also made sure to have a muzzle on him before opening my apartment door. residents seemed to like that i did that.. what im saying is check all your adds in craigslist.... find apartments on the outskirts of were your planning to move too no further than 25 minutes away. usually you will find some that will take them, or if that dosent work some houses are just about as cheap to rent as apartments. you just need to look a bit harder.

I didn't know that...even still, at least get the ball rolling-these rescues might know someone. You better believe if I had only two weeks to find a spot for me and my dog-I'd be doing everything known to man to do that....And I damn sure wouldn't be giving up so easily..."oh, I really don't want to, but it looks like I'm going to have to give my dog up...man this sucks, oh well...hey ya'll, who are you going to vote for?"

Mark_NyB 02-08-2012 07:17 PM

And...I'd like to add, there might be someone willing to foster the dog until they find the right set up.

The reason I know that-I'm almost doing that exact thing right now. Fostering a EB, his owners are military. One is overseas, the other is about to go through a ton of training, and it wouldn't be in the dog's best interest to bounce around every few months...not to mention there will be a two week period where she's "in the field". Responsible owners who care about their dogs-they're out there...even if they're few and far between.

It just occurred to me that many rescues will do "courtesy listings" where they list someone's dog on their website or petfinder page but don't actually take any responsibility for, or possession of the dog.

Call mike at OrlandoBullyRescue (.com) and do it soon. The sooner you call, he may at least have a foster home ready for you to bring him down.

YAH^^^ Someone that is actually trying to help, instead of criticize!! I wish you nothing but the best and I only wish that I could offer more help! Please let us know how things go.

Sometimes things happen, and none of us know when that shoe could be on OUR foot.... no matter what precautions you take, @&^% happens sometimes. I hope everything works out for you and your dog and my biggest wish is, that a miracle happens where you would be able to keep him! Best of luck!!

**ETA** I have one foster that I've had now for 2 years that I can't find the right home for.... and a new stray that I've taken in.... for a grand total of 7 dogs. If I didn't live in the country, there is no way I could have all these dogs. I can't afford all of them as it is, but I can't volunteer to take in any more. Rescues/foster homes around here are over flowing... I can't get anyone to take in the stray or Cooper.... who probably won't go anywhere, but everyone that is willing to take in dogs and help, already has more than they can feed now!

you should have gotten another breed. these are the things people dont understand with these dogs before they get them. they end up finding out afterwards and the dogs pay. stick with a non bully/non APBT/non dominant big breed next time. the dogs always pay.

I'm def going to look into any bully rescue centers that are on our way up to Wyoming, and see if I can take him to one of them. I woul rather euthanize him than have him end up with all these backyard breeders or dog fighters.
REALLY, REALLY think about "rescues".....please. You need to SEE for yourself, AND then somehow be guaranteed the dog won't be moved from foster to foster, moved to another "rescue", or just be one of dozens and dozens waiting for a home.

I would put a dog down before turning over to a "rescue". Things are SO uncertain at them, things change. In light of what recently happened at Spindletop in Texas....a LONG respected (everyone "heard" and "knew" it was THE place for Pit Bulls), no one should trust any "rescue", (especially the very large ones). When there ARE no homes, how is "rescue" going to find one?

I lived at a campground for a week once just because I had nowhere else to go with my dogs. Keep searching.. you will find something!

Really? i must have lucked out, because i had no trouble finding rescues that would take my aunts dogs when she couldn't keep them anymore.(sad that i had to look for her and she did not actively try to save her dogs herself) but perhaps that was because they both had problems and would be euthanized at any shelter. Idk it just surprises me that very few rescues will take an owner surrender

Yeah, you got lucky! When I was trying to find a rescue for a friends dogs, Petey and Buddy (was willing to separate if needed) I emailed and called over 50 rescues in my state and surrounding states because my husband was willing to drive the dogs as far away as MA. to see them saved. Out of all those rescues and the FB networking I did the only help I could get was courtesy postings on rescues web sites because they were all full up. Quite a few of the rescues even had a wait list for owner surrenders.

My fiance, daughter, and I are moving to Wyoming in about two weeks from Alabama. Every apartment we've checked out has a weight limit on dogs (only two apts accept pets): max of 40lbs at one, and max of 25lbs at another. Gator is about 70lbs if not more now, I can't find anywhere that allows a dog of his size; including rental homes, not only are they expensive, but most of them don't allow big dogs.
I bottle fed Gator from 3 weeks when his mom stopped nursing her litter, and it breaks my heart having to rehome him, but I have to. I've been looking for a good home, but it's hard; everyone around this area fights their dogs. I had a guy ask me how much I wanted for him, but he fought his dogs or just used them strictly to breed with. I want Gator to go to a home with children (he's so good with kids) where he can have a good life, and be a companion pet, or even to someone who works with their dogs, because he'd be great at agility, or hunting, or weight pulling. He's super atheltic and I don't want some ignorant idiot to try and fight him, because he'd get killed.

I've almost exhausted my search for a good home for him. I've posted on multiple facebook for sale pages around my area (not craigslist) that he was up for sale, but to an approved home only, and only if they agreed to keep me updated on how hes doing from time to time.

If anyone is willing to adopt him, I know everyone here takes more than good care of their dogs, Im willing to meet yall up somewhere on my way to Wyoming to find him a home. I just want to have some pic updates on him, please.
Have you considered looking at something other than an apartment, like a rental house possibly out of town.I know if i had to move, and had a dog I liked. If the dog couldn't be there,I'd keep looking until i found a place that would allow him.Good luck with the move.

I wish you luck. And wish I could help....

I can't believe some of the attitudes and judgements posted on here.
