So, after Amy destroyed my foam mattress pad a few days ago, I decided it was time to crate her again. She had previously been crated after an incident with a chaise lounge several months ago, but had managed to break out of the crate and seemed to be doing ok, so I hadn't been crating her. After the mattress pad, I got a new, escape-proof crate for her. I came home today and she had gotten out, shredded another bedsheet and attacked all three of my pillows, pulling the stuffing out and scattering it all over the room.

I just bought some padlocks to use on her crate.

I think part of the problem is she has only been getting 4-5 miles of walking a day instead of the usual 6-8, but it's been so fucking hot. It's 105 right now. She doesn't last long in that heat.

If she figures out how to pick padlocks I'm signing over the mortgage to her and leaving town.

Just curious...do zip ties work with escaping dogs?

She would probably chew through zip ties. She's too smart for her own good.

I have not yet had to use either, but as I was reading your OP, I was imaging my dogs trying to break out and thinking of one of the escape artist magicians that tie them selves up with padlocked chains and/or zip tied chains, usually in water, or fire....only it was my dog....silly random thoughts, LOL!!

Instead of crating her, just stick her ass on a treadmill at a walk when you leave.. and padlock her to THAT. There, exercise!

I threatened several of my dogs with that over the years... never managed to follow through with it though lol

why worry yourself with leaving the dog in the house when your gone? get a kennel for the dog then you dont have to worry about anything. make it excape proff and wala problems solved. give the dog shade or put a cover over the kennel and your dog will be fine in the heat. your matress on the other hand is not easy to replace with the prices on them. safe the effort on the dog and get a wire gauged kennel

ok, i have known people that have put a 5x5 kennel in there apartment before to hold there dog because it would break out of the crates. look into it. they do have small 4ft(height)x5ft(width)kennels you can use for your needs. put a rubber horse mat under it or rubber kennel florring under it to stop the dog from trying to scratch out and a cover for the top, or spend some good money on a welded crate.

I have the AKC uptown kennel, it's 8x4x6, but can be set up in two foot sections. Mine is set at 6x4 right now for my dane pup. It came with a sun top, but I don't need it inside. I'm in Canada and it was $344 shipped from Costco.

hmm I like that. I might look into it. My condo is 960 square feet. My other option is leaving her in my spare bedroom and removing all stuffed things.

Or returning her and getting a hamster.

Mental stimulation. There's physical exercise and mental exercise. If you can't physically exercise her as much, exercise her brain. Sounds like a bored dog to me. Work that brain!

She doesn't have SA at all. She did when I first got her but now she's fine. She doesn't even try to follow me when I leave.

I think she just really, really enjoys pulling stuffing out of things. She does it to her toys too.

Frozen Kong stuffed with yogurt and kibble mixed (adjust her feed so she won't gain weight) or peanut butter? I swear the Kong has saved my sanity with Renee on crate rest. Keeps em busy for a long time. Id keep her crated or in a kennel so she cant chew your stuff when you aren't there, but a nice frozen Kong makes crate time much more enjoyable for a dog.

You could also look into those toys that you put treats in and the dog has to figure out how to get them out. I've seen a lot of different ones online and in stores. The come in wood, plastic, rubber and each has a different thing the dog has to do to get to the treat so if you rotate them she won't get bored.

Spend a little extra and get an aluminum crate. We plan on getting one for our new pup when she gets bigger. This is just one site, there are many out there I have to research more to find a well made one at a reasonable price.

for a apbt or bull terrier, staff etc just get one of these http://www.homedepot.com/buy/outdoor...nel-93720.html . they dont need all the that room if they are only going to be in there for short periods. i personally dont like to leave anything in a kennel toys, chewable bedding etc. there have been dog that have eaten kong toys. see if the screen at the top will detour your dog from excaping over this i think i may, but if the dog is persistent on getting out just get 2 additional panels and place them on top of it.


if your doing alot of traveling with your dog were your also bringing alot of other dogs with you and non get along. get a aluminum crate. that is there purpose for a dog that fights there crates. if not one of these would be great.
