I do no leave one on Harley when we are in the house. Ive worked with him on not going though an open door without first being invited and Im always on my older son to keep the door shut. I may start putting one on him when my younger son is old enough to reach doors if he doesnt listen as well as my oldest does. Basically the only time theres an issue is if a dog/small creature were to walk by while the door was left open, thats when all bets are off on him not going out the open door (Ive never tested him so I jus assume he would take off in that case). Ive had his tag get stuck in his crate before (thankfully I happened to be standing right there and saw as he went to get up, he just tried a couple times then laid down to wait to be 'unstuck' lol) so at this point the risk of his collar getting stuck somehow is greater than him running out the front door so no collar inside. I do keep a collar on him though (even while crated, just no tags) when we are at my parents house. Their property is fenced with a 5ft fence but I cannot walk it each time to make sure nothing has dug a hole under it so I keep a collar on him just in case he found a way to get out.

No collars on unless we're going somewhere. Had a scare years ago with my parents dogs that made me decide this. They were wrestling and one got his canine tooth stuck in the others collar, they were twisting around all over the place but couldn't get loose. Both were basically being strangled to death and my dad had to cut the collars off (thank god we were there!). Bad bad bad. None of our dogs have ever worn collars since! Mine are all microchipped, FWIW.
this is why i never have collars on at home. i am paranoid of getting caught on something and having a strangled dog. Peanut only wears his when he is going someplace then like if we are in a hotel collars off.

long ago my parents dog Jade used to be an outside dog and her collar kept getting "rainbowed" that made me nervous i had no idea what she was getting caught on. then we met the people from Paco collars and told us about how they lost the company namesake Paco and THAT scared me but we already had collars off at hom. then i was just reading a VPI Hambone award that a dog was in the backyard and the owner came home and seen the dog's collar and the dog stuck on the barbeque the dog could have lost its life had the owner not come home.

Peanut and Jade are also microchipped and they have 3 doors to get out if they were to "escape" but honestly neither of them will leave the front door.

My dog's collars are on them all the time, except for baths.

Collars on 24/7. They have brass tags riveted to the collar with my name ,phone number and "reward" on it. My dogs are too valuable to run the risk of losing over something as simple as a collar with a phone number on it.

If I'm not home, or we're out somewhere, absolutely. I am just too paranoid of something happening. Henry is not crated and my house is pretty doggie-proofed. He's never in 5 years had any scary hang-up incidents with his collar. Then again, he's not crated so he lays on a couch most of the day while we're gone.

If I'm home, he may go nekkid, if I think about it. If he has to be crated, he is definitely nekkid. Any time we're visiting other dogs or he is having a playdate in a secure area, I take his collar off. I would definitely never leave multiple dogs home alone or crated with collars on.

Henry is chipped and tattooed (just the shelter's identifying mark) but I'm still cautious.

Lounging around in the household, including sleep + leaving her behind at home alone in my bedroom = Not on
Out on the chain/walk/vehicle/anywhere outside (unless swimming at the ocean) pictures/video taking = On

Peanut wears an inexpensive tag collar 24x7 unless she is in the pool (and she tends to jump in with it on anyway) or getting a bath. She is also microchipped. The dogs she plays with aren't collar grabby so we keep her collar on there too.

part 2 (can't edit fast enough!)

I once saw a dog get hung when he jumped a fence but it wasn't the collar that caused the problem - his line was just long enough that he was able to get over the fence but not all the way to the ground. The dog was fine because he had the good luck to do it where I could see him and where I could get to him right away.

Peanut wears her collar in her crate. All she does in there is sleep anyway - she doesn't do anything that could get her caught on anything.

I once caught her by the collar when she was fence running and I was trying to stop her. I'd done it before - grab it and turn her (I didn't try to yank her to a stop) but this time she kept going and I got my finger caught in the collar n broke my finger badly. So never again!

Yes, 24/7 365. My dogs are collared and tagged. Their tags include their city license, their micro-chip tag, rabies tag, name tag and ID-tag. Their tags are all on the same ring so they don't hang all over the place. Their name tags have "if I'm loose I'm Lost" and "Reward" on it.

For the people who keep collars on 24/7 and use thick collars;

Do you use a collar that may not be as thick to make it more comfortable when they are inside/sleeping since it's on all the time?

I just wonder if it must annoy a dog, having a thick collar on, ALL the time.

All the dogs at my house who wear thicker collars have them tapered at the buckle, so I can't imagine it bothers them too much

I've always had dogs under 20 lbs. so mine just wear 3/4" nylon 24/7. Leo's is nylon too, come to think of it.

I LOVE the "If I'm loose, I'm lost." idea! Maybe I'll add a "Check my chip!" too.

I've got one inch biothane on mine. Never seems to bother them. I doubt it's any different than me getting used to wearing my watch all the time.

Jolene and Ruger are on and off chainspots and tethers throughout the day, so they wear collars for that purpose - and since neither of them play with the other dogs, I don't have to worry about their collars getting destroyed.

Peshamba wears the collar she came with from her breeder, that has tags on it and a riveted on ID plate.

If either of those three get crated, their collars stay on. None of them do anything stupid to get hung up.

Bukra and Zealand don't wear collars unless we're going somewhere off the property. If Bukra were to somehow get caught on something or if one of the other dogs grabbed his collar, his neck could be broken. Zealand doesn't because he plays with Bindah a lot, and they're always grabbing each others' throats/necks and a collar would just get destroyed.

Veronica only has a collar on when we leave the house or go outside in the yard.

In the house she is au naturel.

Not necessarily. I have Stillwater leather collars on mine. Renee and Rita like to make Ike and Owen play. If the boys just lay there and don't want to play the girls will try to grab their collars and force them to get up and get moving. I've seen them drag the boys around the basement by their collars and Renee chewed the heck out of the collars when she was a pup. The collars have held up remarkably well.

Mine always wear their collars. 24/7. We have them microchipped, but if one or more got lost I'd rather they were returned as quickly as possible. So, on their collars I have 3 tags. Tag one is the city license. Tag 2 has dog name, city and state, house phone and cell phone. Tag 3 says "Help! I'm lost. I have a microchip! Please contact ResQ then the website and phone number along with the microchip number.

my boys always have their collars on, they are outside but even when inside they have them on accept for bath time. The bad thing is that Logan has lost his tags (they are in the yard somewhere) and Goren dropped his dingo tag (its infront of me) so I have one boy completely untaged and the other with just his rabies, but I have the paperwork for the rabies shots so I am not too worried about it. neither of my boys are microchipped, where I live its kinda a waste of money, no one ever takes the dog to get scanned including the pound, I want to tatoo them but need to find a vet that does it

Our dogs wear collars when they leave the house. They don't wear them when we're sleeping because of the tag noise, so because of our work schedules (I work days, DH works nights)the collars come off at home.
They are all microchipped.
