Bring your dog with you to the board meeting lol, let them see how "vicious" he is with his wagging tail and kisses.
I'd say if it's not in your contract and you really want to keep him get liability insurance on him, you can get it through a pet insurance company or through your regular home insurance. Get his "mental" health tested by a vet if there's some way of doing so, and get a written paper from them saying your dog is sound/safe tempered. Then you have proof of insurance and can go to court with it and most likely win. Worst case scenario somehow they say "YOU MUST MUZZLE!" then train him to wear a muzzle. I mean how often are you hanging outside your condo with the dog besides going potty? I don't know too many condos that have a yard for hanging out in... maybe you do though? Otherwise....move and get a house if it's in your means. |

Just a thought maybe get your dog CGC certified. Don't know if it will help in this situation, but it can't hurt. And honestly your best chance in the long being that your dog is young would probably be to go ahead and try to sale. Being in a condo means you will always be surrounded by other people which even if you do get the okay to keep your dog, it could always mean potential trouble for you and the dog.

Your best bet to take to fight to them...You need to educate the board with facts as well as show them how friendly pits are..I know this can be done...My neighbors knock on my door and ask if my dog can come out to play with theirs because they like my dog teaching theirs good habits...Get hold of your local pit club and ask some of the more gentile pits to come over and talk with your board...Its hard for people to be scared of dogs when they are petting them...

Most people know that he's friendly. We've lived in the building for a year and a half. they're just concerned about what the lawyer for the condo board is telling them about legal liability tried having a muzzle on him yesterday and he was trying to scratch his face off before we got down the hallway. wasn't a basket muzzle though, as the store didn't have any |

IDK, who told you that? It looks to me like the new MD law will hold condo's liable for pit bulls. If I were you, and you can spare a couple thousand bucks, I would hire my own lawyer. It's worth a shot. It would suck if you had to move out, find a new place, and continue the payments on a condo you don't live in. Can you rent the condo out (as a last resort of coarse)? |

Pit Bulls have not been declared dangerous throughout the state. Your dog does NOT need to be muzzled unless you have BSL in your city/county that requires it. The court ruling that caused this whole mess is NOT legislation. It is legal precedent. That means that it matters in court and no where else. As long as you don't have an incident with your dog this ruling will not affect you other than causing problems with landlords who aren't willing to take the risk of a tenants dog getting him sued and HOA like yours fearing the same thing. Oh, and I forgot to mention. If you need a lawyer in 2 years I will be available. Don't know if I will be a good one, but I will be there and ready to fight for your dog. lol. |

It takes some time for them to get used to muzzles. If you think you might really need one I'd order a basket muzzle and then slowly work up to leaving it on him for longer periods of time. He'd get used to it pretty quick and then I bet he'd think "muzzle = fun outside time" before you know it! I hope you're right about him getting used to it and no longer being bothered! It was really sad to see him struggling and clawing at his face yesterday Wtf? Who the hell is in charge in MD? What kind of court do you have in your state? When I read these type of stories it makes me want to graduate law school now, not in 2 years. Man, I would love to be able to put a hurtin' on these judges. america.. a bunch of uptight people that can't stand the thought of liberty and have to force-choke everyone else on the planet to their will. makes me ashamed to be a tax payer |

Best of luck with the board tonight!
Here's a good start to training your dog to not only accept a muzzle but to enjoy having it on (cause muzzles, at least in the beginning, mean treats!) http://selfhelpdogtraining.com/wordpress/?p=198 |

Seems like every suggestion that was given to you, you had an excuse as to why it will not work or why it's not ideal, etc etc etc.
I obviously was joking about taking the dog to the meeting, lighten up. I work in a law office, therefore everything I said is advice that a lawyer has given me in defense of your Condo's lawyer. I hope you try some of our options and hope your meeting goes alright/went alright. |

Seems like every suggestion that was given to you, you had an excuse as to why it will not work or why it's not ideal, etc etc etc. as far as the legal stuff, i appreciate your advice and i think it's solid what you said, i just don't want to have to take things that far unless they force my hand. going to court with them is a last resort, and while it's good to be prepared that's just a step ahead of where i'm at right now. as far as telling me to lighten up.. sorry but i have been stressed out about this situation for weeks. fortunately it looks like i can finally relax. very surprising to me, but the condo board ruled in my favor. i guess enough unit owners spoke up on my dogs behalf, and the board recognized that he's not dangerous! contrary to the md ruling.. my condo is now harboring a pitbull! they all agreed that he's a really nice dog and doesn't pose a danger they asked me to keep him by my heel in the hallways and not to go on elevators that were too croweded, but no muzzle! great victory |

Glad you get to keep him for now. Definitely a Small victory. But my advice still stands. Get him CGC certified ASAP. And if I were you I'd be looking to sell and get a home without an HOA/Condo association. Because somewhere down the road there very well could be more issues.
However if you insist on staying right where you are I certainly do hope you got it in writing from the Condo association that your dog is allowed to be there. And be sure to read all the fine print for any stipulations that could get the dog kicked out before agreeing to it. |

This ruling was decided by precedent? Any idea what previous court case they drew the new decision up from? |

I to live in Md. I havent gone threw all the other suggestiong there were so many, but Idk if this might help. Im not sure what kind of training you have done with your dog but maybe if you suggest to the board that you do training classes and have him "Good dog certified"? It's worth a shot, if you dont have to worry about anyone saying anything anymore.
