help what color is he.

I need some help I have a puppy who is 5 months old now and is starting to look like a chocolate black in the sun but when he was born he was sort of dark blue I'm so confused is he sick or what. That's him bubba on my avatar.

i doubt very much that bubba is sick. pups coats change as they mature. when my pup was born you would have sworn he was a dark brindle. now he is a deep fawn goin on red. my black dogs in the past always seemed more brown in sunlight apart from one she stayed black / and they were all related , lol

Have you given him a bath lately? My oldest is mostly "chocolate" brownish in the areas he licks... paws, our black labs face.. lol Once bathed he is black again for a week or so.

And no that doesn't mean he's sick lol His coloring sounds "seal" to me, but I'm not expert.

Yes, sounds like he's likely seal - they look black indoors but out in the sun you can see the red/brown highlights.

If he is blue then the brown tint in the sun is normal.

Here is my blue pup with the brown tint.

And here is his normal color

It's very common in blue dogs to have that brown tint

Sadie looks a lot like your pup and she looks super shiny and black indoors, but when the sun hits her, you can see the brown tint to her coat also.

Seal? Maybe I should look that up!

Natashasuw 06-20-2012 01:23 AM

Yup, he looks seal.

Seal is defined as a dog who appears black, but in the sunlight will actually be a VERY dark chocolate brown with reddish tones. I have a dog who is seal. Their coat also changes with the weather... when they blow their coat, the dead hair is an even lighter brown so the coat can look mottled and dull while that dead hair is working on falling out.
