In my search for breeders, I'm literally sick to my stomach with the shit I am coming across. Self proclaimed "reputable breeders" that have 40 sires and 40 dams that are pet quality that they are breeding the FUCK out of and producing hundreds of dogs a year at 600+ a piece because they are from "champion bloodlines". Oh God, fuck people man. I just want to set their houses on fire.

If you are going for a well bred dachshund, it's up to you. I have seen so many at the shelter that were most likely from BYBs have tons of health issues.

I might take it to a vet if I paid a lot for it, Shiro was 200$ but still, not enough for a vet visit. Animals die sometimes lol

I can see my friend who takes her ball pythons in for checkups and stuff, but they are 500+$-1000+$ snakes and they are breeders and need to be in tip top condition so I get that, but a gecko I paid nothing for who isnt in distress who is just overly gravid is not a medical emergency and doesnt need a damn vet

I agree, I'm all for rescuing, and I'm happy for people that do, but I want to show and sport a well bred dachshund. No one should make me feel like shit for that or even attempt to.

Ugh, just super frustrated at the other forum. My thread was closed because I didn't much appreciate being banged in the head with "rescue" this and "rescue" that and apparently I asked my question over and over...when really I asked it, got berated for not wanting to rescue, got a few scattered answers, then told I would never get a dog from a reputable breeder, then berated again for not accepting their answers. I domt think I've ever said "wait...WHAT?" so much in one day.

Do I take as much pride in my dogs as people do their children... YES!
Do I provide the best food, treats, sleeping arrangements, living conditions that I can...YES!
Do I love them as much as some people love their children... YES...if not more!

But dammit, they are my DOGS. NOT my children, even if I value them as much as children, they are still dogs.

TO answer you question:
From experience, I have owned two dachshund mixes. The first one was from a family with dogs that weren't health tested and so forth. Sakura, Ended up dying at the age of 8 with no prior heath issues. She just got old.

Now I have Koi who is a mix of Min Pin and Dachshund mix. She is from two dogs who where papered and health tested and showed. She will possibly have issues with her knees, OCD and terrible anxiety.

So in my case It doesn't matter where you get the dog from. Breeder or shelter wont make much of a difference.

I've worked with some pet doxies, and there's a woman that comes to obedience classes that breeds "working" wire coated dachshunds.

Working ones are great. She's got a UDX on one of them, a few CDX's and some CD's and she does earthdog trials with them. I imagine they're titled with earthdog I just don't know what those titles are! lol. They are mildly reactive with other dogs though, one of the bitches is borderline reactive/aggressive. I've never had a problem handling them or felt that they were uncomfortable with me.

The pet doxies I've worked with... well I've got a scar on my right hand from from a 10 week old singleton dachshund puppy that was all out attacking it's own owner. With some firm handling he did come around, I blame the fact that the breeder didn't take the extra precautions and time with the puppy considering it was a singleton.



Not to nitpick here, but I wouldn't guess that a reputable breeder would mix their treasured lines. I mean, do oops litters happen with breeders who specialize in multiple breeds, I guess sometimes but that's a big red flag for me. A lot of smaller dogs have issues with luxating patellas, kind of like hip dysplasia in larger breeds. It happens to the best of breeders, but they work hard to avoid it.

I agree with pookie. Obviously your going to have a better chance with a good breeder who can show you generations of dogs that are sound in the body and mind, over a complete crap shoot with a BYB or rescue dog.

I'm supportive of rescuing but I don't think someone should be flamed for searching out a reputable breeder for the best possible chance of getting a sound, healthy, stable dog. Just my .02 cents though!

It was an oops litter. I hate hearing that. I've never had oops litters and I allow my dogs to go into their first and sometimes second heat. :/

Lol dont feel bad, my Gecko forum is nothing but Lizard Mommies?? Lol or whatever they are called, they hated me and still do, but they get past the fact that we dont agree and help me on my questions at least!

That's what's important to me. Everyone knows how I don't get along with people on another forum but if I ask questions there they answer, and I answer theirs, and we more or less remain civil. I consider it a good forum, because even though we don't get along and I don't agree with a lot of how they do things, they are very informative and except for on CERTAIN topics , they're polite and helpful.

I wouldn't stay on a forum where people were a-holes to someone just for wanting a dog from a breeder, that's crazy.
