Default Genetics Testing
Just went to the vet for our 12 week check up with Eden. After the vet did the weigh, poke you in the butt routine she said that pit bulls are prone to itchy skin- which we've been dealing with since day one.
My husband and I perked up at this and asked what the vet thought she might be along with pit.

That's when she offered us something we'd never heard of....genetic testing for our dog!!

They happened to have just ordered a batch of swabs and they took an oral swab, sent it off and we should hear back in around 4 weeks.

This test will tell us what top 4 breeds are in Eden's line, all for $70. Now, for $120 they can run a blood panel to be studied and they send you a broader profile of all breeds in your dog and the risks associated with those types of dogs.

It seems pretty cool but was just wondering if anyone else had heard of this kind of genetic testing for pooches before?

I wasted money to have them tell me I have a Chi/Bernese Mtn Dog/Italian Greyhound/Bull Terrier
Think anyone would believe me if I tell them that my 68lb Nick is a Chi mix?

LoL Oh my, he's definitely no chi. Well, shoot I was hoping that it would tell us something really interesting. Sounds like they pull it out of their ear.

Lol! I would not use that vet anymore, I hate money grubbing ones. They probably just made $40 to swap your dogs spit. I'm curious to see what she comes back though, every one I've seen is pretty hilarious.

Ouch. Those things are notoriously innacurate and any vet with sense or that isn't a scammer would tell you that

Here's one of the better articles I've seen on these genetic tests and the science behind them.

if you want to put money into genetic testing you can test your dog for dieseases that are known to be common in a breed optigen does some BUT they will not tell you what breed your dog is.

Itchy skin is often a sign of allergies. The bully breed dogs and their mixes tend toward allergies, so if your dog is one of the bullies or a mix and has itchy skin the chances are its from allergies.

Health risks or behavior risks?

It seems pretty cool but was just wondering if anyone else had heard of this kind of genetic testing for pooches before?
My replies in red. But, yeah...those tests are a joke and about their only real worth is when you are trying to prove your Pit Bull or Pit Bull mix is NOT a Pit Bull if you live in an area with a breed ban.

Honestly, after being sold some bs test I'd be looking for a new vet who is better informed, not trying to make a profit off of unnecessary and useless testing and that has experience dealing with bully breeds and allergies.

I think we can use the silly DNA test to get insurance and get away from hate in the town though lol I've seen many different crosses and you'd be surprised at what some of them turn out to be like.

For example this is an apbt x fila straight cross f1 :

This guy right here is a mix of Rottie, Neo, Wolf and other stuff
