Default Bear's Keep
I am so damn excited his foot is almost healed! God I (and him) have been going crazy! I am ready to get started working him!

I am compiling a little note sheet of my plan for his workouts on my computer. I was trying to get a hold of the videos that Fat Bill made, just to get a general idea on what I want to do, but alas I need to buy them and cant right now

I am going off different peoples ways they did it and making one that I think Bear (and I) can do well at. Nothing to crazy though but a lot more than just hand walking.

Anyone here ran their dog through a keep, or know some cool websites or links to other peoples keeps, if so any advice on things that a person in the middle of Phoenix can do to enhance the workouts?

Once I get my blue print down I will post it, but dont laugh if I dont know what I am doing, this is a learning process for me.

I cant wait for his foot to close that 1/8th inch its open! I am sick of my out of shape "fat" blue dog!

Edit: also, I keep seeing people who start off and give supplements, should I or no? I dont see a point as long as he is on a quality kibble/raw..

Do you really think Bear is 'fat'?.

I don't know a whole lot about what your doing but good luck. I'm sure Bear will enjoy it.

He is fat compared to how I want him to be lol now compared to 90% of other peoples house dogs, no he isnt fat per say, just out of shape.

I can see a lot of potential in him and its crappy when you have a set back like he has with his paw. The good time for Arizona winter is being spent on the couch!

I think he will too. He loves to get out and do anything and he was so frustrated yesterday when I took him for a little half lap in the grass around my complex. He thinks he is fine, and is ready to go, even though it would split his pad so fast.

A, I see. I am still getting my head around some Bully Breed owners calling there dogs fat but they have a nice tuck, the dog just may not be fit as your saying. My dogs arn't fat, they have a nice tuck but they defiantly arn't that fit probably.

I bet Bear has a lot of potential. I can't wait to see what you do with him. I feel bad he can't get out and do more, I'm lucky my dogs are pretty chilled and content with what I give them.

I love Bear so I will look forward to your progress.

The way I look at it is the same way I look at myself, I am skinny, yea all and good, but I am not fit at all. Lol I am hoping me and him both will get into a more fit healthy body style, it shouldnt be to hard because we dont have to burn off extra stuff like some people/dogs do.

Hopefully by the end of next week his foot will be closed so I cant start his week of 30 minute feet hardening walks, see how many laps I can do a day in the 30 minutes, starting slow of course because we are both out of shape lol

Hey to the people who work out with their dogs, how well does road work (hand walking or in my case running) work out the dog? I know its going to do him good, how many miles/minutes (walking/running) do you do road work outs with your dog?

when I was walking Goren I would walk about 4 or 5 miles every other day up hill (yea both ways half the trip there half the trip back lol) and swim him. I don't know how well just the walking did but I did a combo of swimming 1 day or so a week, flirt pole 2 days a week and the 4 to 5 mile walk every other day in the spring and fall (when I wasn't pregnant) I was not that dedicated to it, it was more to get him worn out than anything but I think the little I did helped a lot. If the land your walking/running is flat I think you would need to go more, at 5 miles Goren would be finding shade to lay in lol. I am hoping this spring after I heal up I can get Goren out and get some muscle tone back on him (yea I think he needs more muscle lol) but all will depend on when I am aloud and if my baby is aloud to be out that young (yea I would do it when its like 70 but still have to ok it)

This is all I do with Torque . I walk about 2-3 times a day, and I'm up to about 45 minutes per walk. I jog him as long as *I* can go. Mostly just walking, allowing him to pull.

Pookie i would suggest keeping a training log of what you feed him and what you do with him each day and track his weight.

I keep a training both exercise and obedience, food, play, behavior, weight pretty much log everything Peanut does each day (i have one for myself too).
for food when i know Peanut is going to be working harder i give him more food. it is easy to do that with raw too

another thing since i am sure it is already heating up in Phoenix since its already hot here find a place you can take him swimming. its a great work out. during the summers that helps get Peanut looking good fast.

afterworkouts especially when it is hot or at events i give Peanut godog. its like us having glukos or gatorade after a workout it replenishes electorlytes etc it will not help with adding anything just help like those drinks help us.

See thats why I was asking lol I was reading something that said you cant accomplish much body wise by just hand walking/running and I knew that had to be retarded..

I cant allow Bear to pull, but I Google mapped the area from one light to the other and its 1 mile exactly, with a stop sign halfway, so I think I will get about 10 laps around my block in 30 minutes, who knows how long that will take but when I get that then I can go the half mile running or walking, and back or the whole mile and then back.

I am trying to get him to understand running doesnt mean take off way ahead of me lol

I think I am, I dont have a scale though so thats the only down fall.. I am making a day by day schedule of what I want to accomplish and if I do then YAY if not, better luck tomorrow.

Thats what I do with Bear, his food is cut way down right now because he is on couch rest but I know the day he starts working he will be going up in his kibble and raw.
Which do you think would be best as the breakfast before his workouts? I know kibble digests slow but do you think that would hurt his workouts at all?

There isnt really any place in PHX to take a dog swimming, we have a big catfish pond down the road but uhh its in the ghetto and the water is gross as hell lol
It was 80 yesterday, which is bogus because its "winter" lol but we have a lake and a river but they are both very far. I could use my Grandma's pool when it warms up.

it has been in the 80s here too. i can't wait til the pool opens up personally i prefer pools for Peanut i would rather a little cholorine (Peanut swims in dog specific pools either in competition or at the practice pool in a dog facility, one dog out at a time or in our pop up pool i put the cholrine in myself) to that of dirty ponds. we had one that we were taking him to but it was yuck when he would get home first thing i would do is wash him.

honestly i don't know which to feed first. i would guess try each way and see how Bear does and then go from there. i do notice with Peanut now on full PMR he has way more energy.

i don't schedule any of Peanut's workouts because it for me is hard to follow a schedule but i do track down everything in a daily journal so i can see what works with him and know what i did do. i also take pictures of him as we go and since i do my log by hand now i just label the picture by the date and track in down in the log so i can review it later.

i do walk Peanut every day except saturday mornings when we have school or if we have an event. hand walking helps i think keeps a daily maintenace going anyways.
if you want to get him running next to you get him used to heeling when walking then do a heel on a jog then use that while running. that is how i do it with Peanut i don't like a dog out in front because its easy for him to trip me up so heeling works best.

Yeah, well it works for us. I'm sure good quality feed and genetics has to do with it as well, but I have seen a big change in him since I've upped his walking. The only thing is, he is up to 3 cups of feed a day now, so that means I have to spend more money on kibble. But, IMO it is all worth it.

Lol chlorine is the best compared to the way that pond/lake looks Its green and completely gross! I dont think my Gma would have a problem letting Bear come over with me and swim. He has become water obsessed pool wise. Hell I even snuck him down to the pool in my complex and let him swim LOL there were NO signs saying pets werent allowed so I didnt see a problem with it! My HOA manager even came by and waved at us and so far no complaint!
And I mean, in a pond like that who knows whats on the bottom! Glass, needles, fish hooks, all I need is a cut and then he will be infected to high heaven.

Thats a good idea. Maybe do the first week of laps on kibble as breakfast and keep a log, then do a second week of that but use chicken.

I dont think I will have a set schedule, not to strict because days are unpredictable sometimes. Just something where I have a plan of what to do that day/week so I am not trying to cheat and get out of working him like he needs lol
God I need to go shopping and get walking/running clothes. Its been far to long since I have seriously exercised! Finally got a pair of Sketchers so I can walk right and not hurt my feet in skater shoes.
I am for sure going to be taking pictures, maybe once a week or twice a week. I am so excited because just a few laps made him really pop with his guns and hams lol

I do keep him at a heel when we walk, I really cannot have him pull on me and I am right handed and thats my screwed up side, it takes a half lap before he settles into the groove but if I do it every day he has no issue keep heel. I think maybe doing a 10-15 minute jog after a 1/2 mile warm up walk will make it easier, then a 1/2 mile cool down walk after the first week or so of laps..
I just need to get him to realize he has to follow the heel even if we are running. After we do a few weeks of laps with some training jogging thrown in he should get it better.
I hate walking or running or even biking with a dog out in front, its to dangerous. I dont know how many times I ran my other dog over while biking until she realized keep in a heel next to the bike was the better idea.

Yea genetics do a lot, but walking/running is a damn good workout IMO. I think he has the potential to look great off of some hand walking.
If I have Bear on straight kibble he only gets 3 cups, so your doing good if your only up to 3 cups! lol I think it is worth it, when you have a dog who looks great and feels great its totally worth a little extra kibble.

good point ellie. every day i put badger 30 spf sunscreen on Peanut even for walks he has fair skin even though he has colored fur.

since i started Peanut's journal (and my own seperate journal) i notice that i i am very OCD about keeping up with it. i personally don't do a keep with Peanut just keep him in regualr daily shape so he is ready for events each month but since i track so much i have not skipped a day i keep his journal with me right now it is on my couch next to me. i write in it thru the day so that i do not forget anything.

Well my idea is to put him through like 6 weeks of really great workouts and then once we are both able to run for longer distances do that as an upkeep for his overall fitness and then get him started with his WP stuff, I want him to be nice and fit before he starts that.

Thats such a good idea. I will grab one of my little note books and just keep track from week one and get myself addicted to it, I used to have a book like that to write down random things and scribble drawing ideas and stories down.

I want to get him at a nice fitness and then keep him within 3 lbs of that at all times.
