Default Possible Pit bull mix?
I went over to some of the in-laws house and got to know them. Among the house of dogs there was one that stole my heart. I was quick to say she was a Pit mix of some sort. The owner was quick to correct me and say she is a ridgeback.... well then I asked where the dogs ridge back was and like an idiot the lady said it only comes up when she growls and barks at something. I just nodded and laughed in my head.

Anyways I did get some pics since I, for some odd reason, took my camera over. Tell me what you think? I honestly think she has a little pit in her.

And maybe she has some ridgeback in her, but I don't think she is full blood like her owner is claiming. The dog was found so there is really no telling what she is. I just want to see if anyone else sees what I saw.

BTW her name is Oompa

Doesnt look pit, looks like a ridgeless Ridgeback! The head is IMO 100% Rodesian Ridgeback, we have a ton out here in Arizona for some reason

Yea, most breeders cull the ridgeless, which IMO is retarded because those are the healthy non-defective ones, but some breeders will rehome the ridgeless with a spay/neuter document.
I love them, they are great dogs, very friendly, kind of like a pitbull in their people loving temperament. My brother really wants one and I am making him ask the breeders for the ridgeless ones, doesnt make it any less of a ridgeback and he might get them for less or free.

The ridge is actually caused by a genetic spinal defect, but people breed for it because people are stupid. Ridgeless Ridgebacks used to be culled, but people are starting to get a clue and keep them alive.

Yep. I mean, having some with no ride doesnt make them not ridgebacks, and I mean its much better when breeding for a "defect" to out cross with dogs that dont have it to make the stock healthier, right?
Thats the exact reason I want my brother to get the ridgeless..

We posted about the defect at the same time, lol. I totally agree. And, yup, since it's a relatively rare breed in the US, I bet they are a bit pricey, so why not get the same breed of dog for less just because it's cosmetically different from most of it's breed?

They are rare?? Maybe all the breeders are in AZ because I see them so much its crazy! They are always at the parks and in stores hell we even have a big RRB rescue community here..

I agree, plus they are damn good dogs and I doubt anyone is hunting with them over here, so why not get the healthier of the lot with out the ridge lol I dont even get wtf the ridge is even about, is doesnt aid in the dogs hunting ability at all! lol fucking stupid people I swear

I've never seem one in person. I did try to locate a breeder once a few years ago just to check them out, but had no luck within any reasonable distance (within 4 states). Course, that was before I got Ike, so 3 years ago. Might be they have spread around more now.

Well then I feel honored to get to meet one and know that she is in the family and I get to see her from time to time. Temperament wise she was a very well put dog. I liked her. I even told hte owner I wanted to take her home with me and Robby gave me that 'you have enough dogs already' glare LOL.

Wow thats crazy, I love them and wouldnt mind getting on if I had the space. They are some of the coolest dogs, kind of like how people think Labs should be with family, but much cooler and smarter

Yup. Smart, loyal, intelligent, willing to die to protect the "pack", need an occasional CTJM to behave. What's not to love?

There's an AKC bench show in Detroit sometime in late Feb. or early Mar. I'm hoping I will see one there. I go to the bench shows to meet rare dog breeds and form my dog breed bucket list. So far, I have a bunch of Mastiffs on it and maybe a Ridgeback.

Check the AKC web site. They have bench shows all over all year long. I know the one here runs 2 days and goes on all day both days, so you might be able to find one near you that you can go to before or after work.

I had a blast last year. They had all of the dogs, of course, but they also had workshops, vendors, and demonstrations. Last years demonstrations were a man who trains hunting dogs showing how to work different age groups on the decoys and a lady with 3 cattle dogs and somewhere around 8 sheep demonstrating herding. It was pretty awesome.

They also had a small track set up for terrier races. It was hilarious! Most of the Jack Russels were trying to kick each others asses and the one Boston participating kept running to the crowd to get kids to pet her.

My friend is a "dog nanny" (yes, really) to.. 10 Ridgebacks. I think.. maybe there's more. Pretty cool dogs, definitely not for everyone. Here's some of them:

They run them alongside a golf cart daily, and also do swimming daily. LOTS of exercise, and she says they rarely get tired. There are some lines that are prone to HA as well (including the dogs she cares for..).

I went to an ADBA weight pull 2 summers ago and I would NOT recommend bringing your Bear. The way the one I went to was set up had the show ring in one building and the weight pull track in another. They asked that no one allow their dogs into the buildings because some dogs participating were DA and the presence of other dogs distracted them. All dogs participating were kept in crates until they were up.

I wanted to bring my dogs, but I am glad I did not. I saw a few people who wanted to go into the buildings to watch and couldn't unless someone was willing to keep their dogs for them.

Of course, some asshat with a dog tried to walk through the weight pull building while there was a pull in progress. The APBT that was pulling saw the dog, jumped off the track mid-pull, and tried to get to it. The asshat was loudly asked to take his dog back outside and the dog pulling got a do over.

From what I understand, they are supposed to be protective of their pack (both other dogs and humans) and socialized like a Guardian breed. Allegedly, because of their pack hunting origins, they think it a matter of survival to protect their pack.

And they are said to need strong leadership (read: an occasional ass kicking) or they take over. Could be those dogs just had too gentle handling and lack of socialization or that people are badly breeding them because they aren't so common here. We all know the more rare the breed, the more $$ the pups go for and people are stupid.

In talking with handlers/breeders of the breed at the shows, they are NOT supposed to be HA at all. It's a combo of everything above with the dogs my friend cares for.. apparently this ladies line is know to be biters. Lovely that she continues breeding them, eh?
