Don't know if we can still do Weight Pull
As some of you may know, I found out recently that Bransen has a heart irregularity which the vet suspects may be an early sign of Heart Disease. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/frown.png
We just started WP training not long ago, got a him a nice harness made. I love it, he loves it. But from what I've read (and logically assumed) I don't think that we will be able to continue training now that this has come to our attention. Obviously I am glad that we know about it, but I wish it weren't true. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/frown.png I was just wonder if anyone has input on dogs with Cardio issues doing WP. |
I would be scared to risk it.... seems like the risk would be to much to chance it. As for exercise, swimming is great cardio and easy on the body.... I would think that would be good, but I'm curious as to what others suggest as well. Poor Bransen, I hope it turns out to be nothing serious. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/hug.gif

I agree with Mollies Nana on this one. It would be similar to weightlifters...If they had a heart disease would they still be doing it? I highly doubt it.
Talk to your vet to be sure, but personally I would just enjoy Bransen as is for now =) |
no no no.. damn it.. we started this together/same time !!!! http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/frown.png I remember the day you posted and I was gna post the same thing.. I thought YAYY, We're starting it together..lol (I know, ima goof.. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/smile.png ) Our dogs are sim. in age even.
IDK, Hafta see what others say. I would think that if you did some ultra* light it would be same as running around.. but again..idk. Kinda like when i was in school, Had a doctors appointment.. They told my mom i had a heart Mur Mur... They suggested that my mom pull me outta my sports (Softball,Cheerleading and Swim Team ). I laughed really loud and my mother smacked me on the face and said 'this isnt funny' I never did get pulled from my sports. Then again.. its prob. not even close to the same thing for a dog. Im really sorry that you are haviin to go thru this with such a YOUNG boy!! He is only 2 ish right? |
I also agree with MN.

I have a heart murmur, had open heart surgery to fix it, but its still kind of there. I do everything everyone else does just fine.
I already wrote a damn novel about my experience with pets who have heart problems on her Facebook status so I wont post it here. |
If you're serious about pulling, I'd take him to a cardiologist and have an ultrasound done. The OFA site lists upcoming clinics, if you want to save some money.

Sorry that I never replied to this thread - it is a depressing topic for me (obviously) and I think I just try to put it out of my mind. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/frown.png
I had to put the harness away to stop myself from bawling shortly after posting this thread and I haven't been able to look at it since. Bransen is 3 years old, kamikaze. Leslie H, I am not all that serious about pulling (it was just something fun for us to do together) but he is going in for an ultrasound tomorrow. I am going to ask about this whole WP thing while we are there. |
What is the irregularity? If it's just a murmur, I'd have it examined by a cardiologist and graded. low grade murmurs aren't a big deal and he could still WP. Other illnesses or a murmur at 3 or above I'd not risk it. Course, it really depends what the vets say.

We aren't sure of the exact condition, MJ. The vet suspects that it's a valve issue, but we should have a better understanding after his ultrasound tomorrow.

Good luck!
