Default Coat Color Question
Before anyone asks for pics..I do not have a high definition camera so I can't show you, I will describe as well as I can.

Slayer according to most everyone is a Black and White dog. However in the light half the fur on some areas of her neck and throughout the body are reddish/brown. It almost looks brindled in, but its so faint you only see it in the sun if you are beside her. Is this normal??

Very few bull breeds that I've encountered are a TRUE black. She's probably seal

Jolene's registration has her listed as a white dog with black markings... but she is DEFINITELY white with seal.

I thought that might be the case...she looks REALLY black..but then you get her in the sun..or right next to you and you can find little brown furs everywhere.

Yup, she's seal! Jolene looks black if she's dirty, and during winter... but when she's clean, and when she blows her coat for summer you can definitely tell. She's a pretty light seal... I've seen some that you really have to look at to tell!

I think those dogs with that REALLY subtle brindle might actually BE genetically brindle. From what I understand... to get brindle pups, one of the parents has to be brindle. I know a male that has that ''hint'' of brindle in certain lighting although he ''looked'' black if you weren't actually looking that hard.... he was bred to a pied dog, with no brindle and had brindle pups, which in turn means one of the parents had to be brindle. I think anyway!

Interesting..that would be one possible explanation for why there are black furs too

The dogs we call "black brindle" are actually genetically fawn brindle, just with HEAVY black overlay. So, it's possible that Slayer could be SO black-overlayed that you BARELY see the stripes

My girl Venus was like that as well. Looked black but in the right lighting, you could see brindle stripes in there. When I got Nyx as well, I noticed she had one TINY red stripe on her neck. Her previous owners didn't even notice it. That was the first and only time I've ever seen that. I wish I would have taken a picture of it....

It's common for puppies/younger dogs to show more brindling, and for it to fade out as they mature. I know a seal pup that had brindle markings on her abdomen that were pretty clear in the sunlight at 8 weeks... now, at 15 weeks, you can't see them hardly at all!

I had a black cat that had blacker stripes that you could see in the sun. I never could find an actual color that described it. Or find a picture of any other cat that color. Interesting to hear I wasn't imagining shit, and other animals can be colored the same way.

So did I!! That is really weird lol. He was the most "dog-like" cat I ever had... slept in a dog house, ate dog food, followed us on walks, tried to bark, and sat on command! lol He looked solid black, except in the sun he looked like a tiger with black-on-black markings!

Wow,you two. That's almost as freaky as when Pookie and I discovered that we both used to have gay neighbors who we enjoyed watching make out! And we both hate cooked carrots. It's a small world,I tell ya.
