Default Collar, scratching and what to do?
Bella has a bald neck from scratching at her collar. We have tried it looser, tighter and it makes no differance. She still scratches. We first suspected she may have had an allergy to her nylon collar,so we bought a 100% natural leather-still scratching herself BALD in the front of her neck. Now I don't know what to think? Is she just uncomfortable wearing a collar, allergic or ??? Is there a collar she may be able to wear comfortably? I was thinking possibly natural organic fibers like hemp or cotton collars?Or possibly a metal collar(like woven stainless?) We want to have her tags+ ID on her and to be able to control her at all times, what can we do?

Here is her neck where it is rubbed off.......

hmmm, I would maybe try one of the suede lining or lamb skin lining, she might just have really sensitive skin to anything that is not super smooth/supple so if you leather you have is stiff or has an edge it might be the problem now. I hope you can figure it out, that looks painful/itchy

thanks EllieHanna. Its itchy, but not red or painful. It's just stubbly. No redness, flaking, rash, etc. The visable skin in normal, just hairless.Like the hair is buffed off from the scratching.

wich is less irritating suede or lambskin?

Boomer had thin hair on his neck anyway but wearing a regular collar made it thinner. He now wears a martingale chain collar like this one. Martingale Style Adjustable Dog Collar - Dog Supplies

He does not scratch at it and it is very loose. The hair on his neck looks good now.

I was wondering if you have her tags on her collar? My Rottie does this if we put her tags on her collar. Now we only put the collar with tags on her if she is going somewhere.

I'm not sure what to tell you only that Sasha has been doing something similar. She has been scratching the heck out of her neck. We determined its her collar but she did it with leather and nylon. Its just been a recent development. She has scratched a sore on her neck and whats worse it appears when the clasp rests on her she now has a small bruise, that looks a lot like the clasp. We tried loosening it, tightning it. Didn't help
We are at the point where she is only wearing it when she is outside. And she hasn't been itching and scratching the last few days. The sore is starting to heal and bruise is going down.

I too am curious if its something with the collar, maybe an allergy, or maybe it was aggravating her by being on. She used to wear her collar 24/7. And if maybe there is an alternative collar we could try. She has done much better only wearing the collar when we take her out.

I think that Collar Mania just released some suede line collars, I believe Kady05 has one for Sako. I wonder if something like that would help? I know that you can also get collars from her that are satin lined, that may be an option as well. Even if you wanted to try a fleece lined one or heck, maybe even hemp like you stated, I'm sure Lisa from Collar Mania could help you!

I'm thinking since it appears the fur is trying to grow in that maybe it's 'itchy' like razor stubble is itchy.Like collar rubbing on razor stubble. The more she scratches because the collar rubs, the more she rubs off fur and then it starts to regrow again,so it starts itching like heck.So the scratching begins.......Evil cycle. I think we are going to keep her neck nekkid until the fur grows in,then look for a padded collar. Collar mania sounds like a good christmas present for the Bella bull(I can hear myself justifying another collar purchase as we speak-GL will LOVE having to relent feeding my collar addiction due to medical reasons.lol)

With 9 dogs in the house,I have to have some control, and tags/id JIC they get loose.I want to be able to grab them, and retrieve them or be able to handle them if play 'turns'.Most of the time they rough house and inveriable smash full tilt into the screen door,so I want to make sure I can get them back if the door accidently pops open.(we have it latched, locked and blocked, but still)

This is a pretty common deal with this breed. They really have quite sensitive skin. I have one in my crew that has almost always had a staph infection somewhere in her body. It's nasty. She has never passed it on to anyone, but she is on antibiotics and steroids a great deal.
I know that Nu-Stock heals sores very very well and the hair grows back in quickly. Sulfadene is another good medicine as well.

Medicating something you don't know the cause of and that is re-occurring seems a little pointless to me, unless you want the dog permanently on medication.

You can try a Fur Saver chain collar.. the links are bigger. Though I honestly would just take her collar off in the house.

I leave daisies collar off at all times unless senate going somewhere but she still looks red and irritated on her throat. So I'm going to try a poly propalene collar from nismo that has padding. If nothing else i will just use her still water kennels walking work harness full time instead of a collar.

You could Google BULLDOG SUPPLY CO and try one of their padded collars. My Dobe has the same exac thing, and I'm hoping to try one of those collars next paycheck.

Lucy has always had thin neck fur, and it's kind of sensitive. I also suspect it has something to do with all the rough housing she does with the other dogs, as they tend to grab on to her neck skin and yank on it a lot.

I got her a collar from Collar Mania, and it has some kind of lining (I think satin?), and her neck is a good deal furrier when she does wear it.

I'd take her in for a skin scraping. I notice a couple smaller bald spots on her head. Kind of looks like demo.

What about a harness? Moisture can get caught in the folds of her neck but it might not happen with a harness. I try to keep a harness on Bentley at all times because he always scratches at the collars.

Chloesredboy.I know wich spots you mean. Those are some scars that never grew in hair from her scrap with a housemate.(despite my efforts with vitamin E and Nustock)They are prior punctures from the altercation.(most of the damage was in the head, ears and face)Some are bald scarring and some grew in thin white hair.My pictures are kinda crappy as I kept getting a ''greeting'' from the pups as I was trying to photo Bella's neck.lol

I second the harness, even if it's just while she's healing and you figure out a new collar situation. This way you have control, but it's not bothering her balding neck.

Take her in for the scraping to be safe, but I would bet almost anything that she's allergic to nylon. Try leather and see if it clears up.
Bransen had the exact same problem, finally when I switched to a leather collar and within just a few weeks his fur started growing back in.
He also had some spots on his head and face that the vet said was dermatitis, which was most likely induced by the allergy.
A harness won't make any difference, if it's Nylon it will only cause more hair loss - I tried it!

Brenda from Mighty Harnesses made me a 2" yard collar and lined it with the same stuff she lines harnesses with for free so the fabric wouldn't touch Bransens' neck. The collars are polyester but I've heard/read that dogs allergic to Nylon are often effected by that as well so better safe than sorry!
