Default Discipline?
Do you guys hit your dog to enforce discipline? To show who is the boss?

A tug on a collar or leash coupled with a whatever command you use for "stop that" usually does the trick. As far as showing who's boss it seems like working on stuff like walking without pulling on a leash, making the dog sit while you go through a door first and then letting him come after, fifteen or twenty minutes of obedience a day, or a couple times a day if his attention span holds will go farther that a whipping. It might even cut down on discipline problems so you have to enforce it less.

I NEVER hit Trigger , usually a command like NO does the trick. I don't want him to become afraid of my hand.

I don't use any corrections of any kind while training, not even verbal. I've never laid a hand on my dog, don't yank on his leash, and only use "no" extremely rarely. My dane walks nicely in public, and is nearly competition ready for obedience. He just learned to retrieve the dumbbell, with a clicker only.
I don't need to show my dog who's boss, we respect each other and communicate flawlessly through training.

Well, I won't say I've never smacked my dogs, that'd be a lie. I don't do it to "show them whose boss" though. If one of my dogs is deliberately disobeying me or just plain being a brat, then yeah, they'll get a whack on the butt. Generally speaking though, a firm "knock it off!" is enough for them. And FWIW, none of my dogs are hand shy.

Yea me either.. its more like I just raise my voice to sound commanding. I just met a dogman who was very successful in the sports who does that. When he shouts all his dogs shut up! I was like wtf?! When I ask how did he did it.. he said he hits them when he needs to and when they become uncontrollable.

I just went to his place just a few days ago to breed my bitch to his dog, he even showed me that before that dog even fights back when he is getting commanding with him, then he hits him occassionally and that kinda tamed him.

***for historical purpose only***

That actually contradicts my knowledge that you shouldn't hit your prospects and even shout at them.. because in the match when you shout they might think you are scolding them and they would cower.

Yup, that's where I'm at. Mine generally listen to an "ANNNNT! Stop it/Drop it!" Or sometimes I will draw out their name in a disapproving voice like moms do when a kid is in trouble and they get the point. Once in a while, someone will decide to test me or be so into whatever bad thing they are doing that I pop them on the tush to get their attention and get the point across. "Hey! I was speaking to you! Pay attention and quit it!" None of mine are hand shy, either. Although Ike does get all emo and mope for an hour or so.

Bentley was super squeamish and hand shy when I got him. The first 6 months I had him, if you made any sudden movements around him, he'd drop to the ground and pee.. That was really annoying, but it was something we had to work through. I've smacked him on the ass a couple times when he decides he's not going to listen (like Kady05 and MJJean) but I've never full on beat him. He's still hand shy a bit. He'll book it to his cage or out of the room if he thinks you're going to smack him. But mostly, I can get my point across by speaking in a low growl toward him.

Carter, the Dogo, is the extremely submissive, pees when anything happens dog. You can't even walk up to him without him peeing. And this is me, I live with him and I have to watch him carefully when I walk up to him to avoid accidents. If he's overly excited, he pees. If he's nervous, he pees. He's got the bladder of a small excitable dog but I know of 1 specific incident that I smacked him. Usually calling his "BAD" is good enough for him because generally so submissive anyway. Not the 1 time around Xmas, he was chewing on a new Kong. He had been doing his thing on the other end of the room. I went over to check and make sure he was doing okay. Apparently made the epic mistake (in his eyes) of touching it and he growled at me. I don't know if he snapped at me because I had smacked him and taken it before I had a chance to think much of what was going on. That's the only time I've hit him because I know he's very sensitive.

It also depends on the dog. Some dogs are sensitive to verbal discipline (Like Raj in my case) and others are not as sensitive (Like Willow) will sometimes need a slap on the butt to get her attention and make her realize that I mean business. Are my dogs hand shy? Nope.

Yes it really depends on the dog.. I've seen a dog that don't want to be commanded when she is already agitated and would bite you if you did. But if she is on a controlled environment.. she is tamed like a lapdog.

first thing i have and will slap the hell out of my dogs if they need it. most of the time no is all that is needed

second this shouldn't even be a problem for a match dog. why would you even be training a match dog to listen. an if you are loud and your dog cowers it shouldn't be in the [] it should be behind a bullet getting pts

You would be surprised what "bonding with your dog" does in the []. Not just my experience but it's been mentioned by alot of old time dogman. Even carver bonds with bullyson before the fight. Jeep would quit if only he didn't listen to crenshaw and got his confidence back. If those things don't matter.. then why do they need a handler? Might aswell just drop them in the box and let them kill each other.

I don't beat my dog, I have had to make him lay down or sit a few times, like the other day (he was jumping and would not listen to a word I was saying and ended up landing his nails on my leg, that made me grab his collar and take him to the ground but that is about it) normally a "Off" or a "sit" or "down" will stop him from doing whatever he is that I don't want him to do but now that I am pregnant he seems to try to get away with more than he knows he should...but that is really my fault cause I have not been able to walk him like I need to right now, either way, no I do not hit my dog, I use collars, body language, words and body blocking

I'll give Niki a pat on the butt with a loud "AH-AH" when she grabs a bit of cat kibble out of the cat bowl, other than that, I have to admit shes actually really good. When she gets overly boisterous and mouths during play, I say OUCH and pretend to cry, then shes all sorry and licks the skin off my face haha!

That is the toughest I've been with my dog, each occasion she caught me with her teeth. Has never happened again. I never hit the dog & I never raise my voice. Training is always reward based & discipline is specific to the problem, like digging holes in the garden, bury the dog in it. Works a treat & no violence. Watching owners being "rough" with their dogs I often get the impression from the dogs that they are going WTF? Like any other behaviour, the dog will get used to it & learn to avoid you if it feels your going to hit it.
