Default Ok i have to bring this up.African Dog...
So I'm walking Dutchess today, these two guys want to pet her as most people do so I say its cool. He asks me what kind of dog.. i say "Pit Bull mix".She may be pure but I dont have her papers so..mix. Anyway he says o yea, looks like she has lab in her.. I said no she doesnt,I know there is no lab in her. So his friend says she looks like an African Dog..I then say ,o yea they look like hyenas.I didnt want to outright say o yea,a hyena because im not 100 percent sure they are. He was like no but its a dog.. I'm like oookk, continue out walk

Have you guys seen pictures of these "dogs"..They look like hyenas to me.

The only African dog I know of is the African wild dog/cape dog... But that's a multi colored mess of a dog!

Also just for clarification, hyenas aren't canines! Sorry, that's just a personal irk of mine.

Just out of curiosity, how do you know your dog doesn't have lab in her or are you just guessing?

Have to agree here.. if your dog has no papers, then you will never know what exactly it's mixed with.

And, this is an African Wild Dog, maybe that's what they were talking about? Who knows.

if she looked like she had lab traits..i wld consider it...i been around dogs a lot,you kinda pick up what different breeds look like in mixes.

98% of people will assume that my dog is a shepherd.

You can't look at a dog and know for sure what they are with no other information.

She has zero shepherd in her. Grandparents were purebred smooth collie and lab, mother was a mix of those 2, father was a purebred shar-pei. Like I said, you can't just look and know.

Regardless, you brought it up, so I was commenting.

As for your original post, I think you've gotten appropriate answers.

I am guessing they meant the African Wild Dog, but I also find that the boerboel is also known as the South African boerboel.

Very true. Most mutts you can guess all day what they are made up of, but you will never really know unless you know exactly what mom and dad were.

As far as the African Wild Dog goes, we have 4 of them at our local zoo.

Here is an article on them its wikipedia but its something

Not only are hyenas not canines, they're closely related to felines. Retractable claws and all.
Zion, you're going to have to learn so smile, nod, and walk away. The absurd trash that comes out of people's mouths about "pit bulls" and animals in general is astounding. I could go on for hours (and have) about animal myths and misconceptions from ants to zebras. Most people have no clue what they're talking about.
