Is there a cause for this comfort sucking? Is it a bad habit?
I looked it up online and i want to know whats your take on it? Gigi has recently been doing it again. Like just now my neighbor's dogs were barking and so she was barking at them. I told her to stop, and so she did. But then she gets in her doggy bed and starts to whine and comfort suck. And she did it on 3 other occasions today (those 3 werent in a result from me telling her to be quiet). the other 3 comfort sucking were just a result of her sleeping preference. should i be concerned? |

My puppy is 7 months old and still "comfort sucks" (I'm assuming you mean like he was nursing or something in his sleep...?) from time to time when he's asleep at night. I dont think it's any kind of bad habit or anything, maybe just something they are dreaming about or just...something that naturally comforts them?
He also grinds his teeth really oddly right before he falls asleep, when he's getting comfy in a spot. Its the oddest thing. |

I would stop it if you can. Sounds like a bad habit. Maybe when she starts suck redirect her with some short happy obedience work that she knows and does well. Lots of praise and some treats. Then give her a filled kong or something else to do with her mouth.

When my dog was ready to go to sleep she would gather up the blanket she was laying on and get some in her mouth and suck on it like she was nursing just like a cat and her front paws would go up and down too. She was taken away from her mother early and she did this for probably the first 10 years. The only problem from it was it left a big wet spot on the blanket
![]() It brought her comfort and I didn't see any reason to stop her. |

Murphy doesn't "suck" his toys anymore (did that until just recently), but he still "kneads" his paws if he is chewing his rope. He also does this if he bow-stretches in front of me, especially if I talk to him. Funniest thing I've every seen, but, since he's not in a situation to make him anxious, I just chalked it up to a weird quirk.
