just a rant
i took my dog to the vet today, first time i have taken him to his particular vet, he kind of made me angry, all he had was negative things to say about APBTs, told us he "reccomended" us not to have one with kids. UGH why do people have to be like this? hes a 12 week old puppy! ok i will take APBT might be responsible for more deaths than any other breed but i like how he fails to tell you that chihuahuas bite more people than any other breed. sorry just needed to vent. i hate narrow minded people, hes supposed to be a VET hes supposed to like all animals. i get that he might be trying to warn me or give me pointers but dont just bash the breed.
sorry its alot of rambling. |
Find another vet.
This one does not deserve your business, not would I want him handling my dog. |
I agree with Madeleinemom, your vet sucks. Sounds like he's just in it for the money like so many others. I hope you look and find a really good vet and when you do I hope you stick with him/her for life. Its worth it.

I agree find another vet... he may not work with you very well based on your dog's breed.
|
Vets charge enough for their.... work.... as it is. Find yourself someone with some decency to mind their own business and who doesn't eat everything they hear from the Media.

Anyway, long story short, if you don't like your vet, it's their loss. Go find someone who will appreciate your dog as an individual and treat it fairly and objectively. |
i dont even know where to begin looking, we live in a town of about 200 people and 1 vet, the closest big town is a few hours away.
|
Wait didn't you say you live near Pittsburgh?
|
LOL welcome to the party.........look at what this vet had to say

How annoying! He should do his job and not give his opinion about your dog
|
it's funny actually.it really shows how uneducated the vet is about the breed.i'd try educating him but if he continues to argue i'll get rowdy with him back and teach him about the breed.i'd even recommend this site.my vet loves pit bull type dogs,he breeds them also.
---------- Post added at 11:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:06 PM ---------- that clinic is funny.the owner is a complete idiot to let her dog attack her and not have it pts.that was her fault and not the dogs.how did he know that the dogs were inbred?hmmm? |
http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/no2.gif I would find another vet if I were you that actually has a passion for the breed and that you are comfortable with. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/smile.png

I had this happen with my doctor when I told her I was trying to have kids and mention that we had five pitbulls at the time. I thought her eyes were going to bug out. She said some nasty remarks to me. I called the clinic and complained about her and I changed doctors.

Find another vet. When Sinead was sick, I had to take her to a vet in the group other than my regular vet to get an immediate appointment.
He pissed me off on a few things, but he was fine with her being a pit bull. She was feeling REALLY cruddy so the only time she perked up was to snarl at a little dog in the waiting room, and he just laughed and said, "Well, I guess you're healthy enough to remember you're a pit bull" and gave her some love. |
I would also find another vet, if possible. That is just too hard to take every time you go in. I do not know what it is like in other states, but here in Michigan they actually give the vet students a anti-APBT booklet. It is a booklet with a bunch or worng info about pits in it. All the vet students from MSU receive one, and it is just terrible. We are lucky, we have access to three vets who are awesome, and love the APBT. However, some of the newer vets students are now getting this 25 page booklet, and I am sure it will affect their outlook.

but I presume you googled veterinarians in your area and checked the yellow pages within a reasonable radius of your home? If you honestly have no other veterinarians nearby...I would compile a list of educational materials related to the APBT and every time I visited I would bring one to your vet and discuss it briefly with him...telling him it was upsetting to me that he had such misconceptions and that it was important to me as his patient that he fully understand my dog so that I could feel confident he was giving the best and most well informed care possible. |
well pittsburgh is about 3 hours away i live right in the middle of columbus oh and pittsburgh,
my husband says i should "suck it up" that he did well with the dog just had opionions of his own, he only has 1 set of shots left then we are good for a whole year about that vet banning pits, thats rediculous! |
Gaud... I gotta thank my lucky stars for my vet. They absolutely ADORE my dogs and always say how amazing the breed is. I feel bad for you. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/frown.png

One of the vets I brought mine to also expressed some prejudice for 'pit bulls', and gave me some unsolicited advice that I thought was way over the top. I came away thinking, ...this guy doesn't like dogs,...it must suck to be a vet who doesn't like dogs. I wouldn't go back.

I think it's unanimous. Find another vet! We ran into this when we rescued Jake from the shelter. They gave us a certificate for a little $$ off with a specific vet in the area that they said they work with. As soon as we got in the exam room, he started in on why would anyone want to own this terrible breed.
He didn't even get a chance to put his hands on Jake. We were out the door. We took him to our regular vet, who just happens to love him. Won't make the same mistake twice. |
