Did anyone see the PBS special last night "Nature: dogs by design"?
It was very interesting. It had a lot to say how us as humans have made some very big mistakes when it came to creating some breeds and how during the industrial revolution creating dogs and breeding became a way to pass time or a hobby. A thing of status. Also that is how we have the over 400 recognized breeds we have today. It also talks about how the most accepted bull dog the Old English Bulldog should never have been created. They are physically and genetically a mess. But the Bulldogs of old (the ones that our American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, our American Bulldogs most resemble) were the healthy ones. It was quite facinating. |

Completely OT: But in regards to "Bulldog of old" I saw some root beer or beer yesterday at a store called "Old Bulldog Beer." Sure enough, it had "old school" bulldogs as its mascot. ---------- Post added at 12:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:35 PM ---------- What i find interesting is as a society a lot of breeds we have come up with have had a lot to do with appearance or looks according to this special. I find it funny that we (generally speaking) would prefer a dog that can't even physically give birth on its own naturally. Over a bigger, stronger overall healthier dog. But at the time and even now it seems a Lap Dog is a status symbol. It was a very interesting show. It only touched breifly on a bunch of different topics wish it could have gone more in depth |

I watched that show.
The show I liked better was the one on the national geographic channel,And man created dog. It starts with how man and wolf could have first interacted why specific dog breeds were created or how certain traits were bred into or capitalized on for specific purposes.Ends with how all the unwanted or strays were caused by man. |
