Sometimes I crate both when I leave. But more often then not Powder has the run of the house. Achilles is still too young and irresponsible for me to rotate them and leave him out while I'm gone.

Deuce is crated when we leave the apartment for safety reasons. If the idiot workers here decide to barge in like they do, I don't want Deuce getting out of the door. He loves his crate, he chooses to be there when he wants to relax, and he also dines in there.

When we get the new house, I haven't decided If I'm going to crate him all the time or not. I think I'll leave the crate door open and see how that goes. He'll prolly stay in there while we're at work anyways.

i dont think crates are cruel unless they stay in there 24/7 but if its only a ouple hours a day i dont see the issue.

I don't crate Odin but he usually just sleeps in his crate anyway. He tended to spill his water in the crate from moving around, so I just leave him in the house.

Both of mine are crated when we leave the house. One upstairs with the door closed in the guest bedroom and one downstairs.

I don't see how it is sad to crate a dog... my dog is safe in his crate - he can't eat/chew on anything potentially harmful. Oh, and he's an escape artist so a dog run doesn't work - he's figured out how to jump over, dig under, and even has pushed through the gate. I would do a chain spot however, too many dogs run loose in the country and with BSL so close to here I'd rather not risk some dog starting a fight with my dog and my dog end up getting blamed. So, right now crating is the only option.

Now what would be cruel is if I DIDN'T crate and my dogs were killing the cats and bunny and then starting on each other. I guess then I'd get down to one dog.... survival of the fittest! Damn... I'd be rich all of the sudden with only one dog to feed!

I crate J every time I leave the house, Sparkles is crated sometimes... But J is crated for his own safety and because I have a feeling he'd get bored and find a way to open the fridge.

I definatly see where you are coming from, i have no clue what its like over there as you say, lots of dogs running around and BSL ect.
I would be scared a bear would get my dog in the US

I have always chained, but i guess its just something easily done NZ

Not too many bears around this part of the US. But a lot of coyotes, coy-dogs, even quite a few bobcats and mountain lions. We are in farm country so we have to worry about loose dogs, coyotes, coy-dogs, and BSL which is only 50 minutes away.

if it wasn't for crates, I'd have a destroyed house and possibly a bloody mess if my Dane got to my english bulldog.
