Default My Pit bull attacked a Cobra in the front yard
Had a quite horrible happening today, with a lucky ending.

Got home around 6 pm, by the way I live in Thailand.
Got in the house and I could her my Dog barking outside, but not the normal watch out I'm here, kind of bark.

Got out and she was trying really hard to dig out something our the bushes.
I look inside and cannot find anything, and go in again. Figured is was a toad or smaller insect which are very common here.

All of a sudden she starts again and I go out to make sure whats going on. When I come out I see a cobra Standing up, about 1.2-1.4 meter in length, and Gp attacking it. Bites one time in the head and then I talk her to stop, but she in quite a frenzy. Drops it and bites it in the body and by now the snake is half dead but.

At this time I manage to get her away from the cobra and finish it of, by this time I don't know if she got bitten or not. I Take her inside and now she has a lot of saliva coming from her mouth, start to look for puncture wounds. After this she starts to tremble and I think she is going into seizure. After a while she calms down and I realize she manage to protect me and kill the cobra with out getting bitten.

Lucky ending to a bad moment

At least there aren't any cobras in AL, or when Cleo got that snake you would have had a heart attack!

You were very lucky! You should call your dog Mongoose! I have never heard of a dog killing a cobra before.

One of my former forum buddies has a Great Pyrenees (sp?) that regularly dispatches rattle snakes. A couple years ago she came out to find the dog had saved her child from a bite by getting between the kid and the snake and doing battle. Sometimes, I think we underestimate our dogs. Another friend had an Akita in TX that rid the house of scorpions regularly.

BTW, that whole story makes me very glad I live in a place without snakes. I think MI has 1-2 poisionous varieties, but they are pretty rare. I would live in constant fear for my kids and dogs if I had to worry about snakes and scorpions and such.

You do have three of the most dangerous pit vipers in the world instead of cobras.

Rattlesnakes, Mocassins, and ??
"In Alabama, there are numerous non-poisonous snakes, but only six species of poisonous snakes. Five of the six belong to the pit viper group and include the Eastern diamondback rattlesnake, timber rattlesnake, pigmy rattlesnake, cottonmouth (water moccasin) and copperhead. Snakes in this group are also characterized by having retractable, hollow fangs near the front of the mouth. These are used to inject venom into prey. The sixth poisonous snake found in Alabama is the coral snake, which belongs to a non-viper group. The coral snake does not have retractable, hollow fangs, but rather a pair of short, erect, grooved fangs near the front of the upper jaw."

Is That Snake Poisonous?

All we've got are Massasauga rattlesnakes (and they have the least toxic venom of all the rattlesnakes), they're hard to find, and if you want to avoid them, they don't live in the U.P.(and you can fire guns and live off pasties to your heart's content!). Oh, and I think water moccasins are venomous.
