Default Should i let strangers pet my dog?
Long story-short

if i keep letting strangers pet my dog what if one of those strangers decide they want my dogs. Today after letting someone pet my dogs and kinda talking to him he was super sketch. My dogs are friendly ans social but what if they try to steal my dog from me?

i know this is far fetched and ridculous. but i wanna be safe than sorry

I've never seen a problem with it.

And if some idiot is stupid enough to come to my house and steal my dog, well he'll have 300 pounds of dog to deal with and the business end of my shot gun.

Just get a nice gun.

Walk during day light hours, pepper spray, legal knife, and gun with a CCW if you can.

You're talking to a 100 pound girl here. I live in a crappy ghetto neighborhood, and have never had any worries about walking my dogs. I don't do it at night, and I can hold my own in a fight, and if someone tries to steal my dogs from me, they're going to have to kill me.

If you are scared someone may try to snatch your dog, follow the advice OmgRobyn's advice... Get a concealed carry permit, mace, some kind of defense... I don't have to worry about it, because nobody it stupid enough to try petting my GSD And I only walk my other dog with him... I live in a less-than-perfect neighborhood and I'm a small female, I carry legal weapons and of course the 85 pound stranger-aggressive GSD...

If someone makes you uncomfortable, and you are seriously thinking they're about to try something just tell them no, say he/she is in training and can't be distracted by strangers... To the average Joe, it sounds a little weird, but most know nothing on dog training and will accept it.

However... owning a gun and not knowing how to use it is pointless. If you decide to get a gun, please learn how to use it!

I learned how to use mine in the living room. I stacked up a row of books, loaded it, pulled back the sliding thingy and shot off 15 rounds. The books were toast.

I tried that with my .270 rifle also. ... unfortunately the bullet went through ALL the books (several big thick text books), through the house, outside into some undisclosed location...

Lesson learned? Only shoot pistols in the house. Also... Rifles are crazy strong!

I have always made sure that everyone who wants to pets my dogs when they are puppies and until young adulthood get to do so. Between a year and 18 months, my dogs are expected to be well behaved and not bugging people to be pet. We keep them very socialized and get them around a lot of people and things going on so they will be comfortable in any situation. But, we do not encourage them to be approaching strangers, nor do we allow strangers to pet them. They are happy friendly dogs, but not to the point of people thinking they can walk up and take one.

This is just how we do it, especially since one of my Champions was stolen right out of my backyard in a matter of moments, never to be seen again.

I'm sorry but really? Shooting a gun off in a house to learn to shoot? That is just not very smart. That doesn't even mean you know how to use it! Wow! I don't want to get off topic though...

My advice OP would be to learn to use a gun properly if you feel you need one and get a CCW, or carry a legal knife, or pepper spray.

A GSD is a protection dog. That is an acceptable trait... and in some cases a desireable one. If she can control her dog, I see no issue. If it was an APBT that would be a different story.

Well if you're running, I doubt they'd be able to catch you, and it's a perfect reason for you to not let people pet your dogs.

I don't even let people pet my dogs anymore when we're out on walks. Mostly because I'm sick of people. And it's really hot out and I just want to be done with walking 3 dogs. I'd rather have people think my dogs are mean, and stay the f**k away from me and my house.

I rarely let anybody stop and pet my dog on walks. I'm not a people person plus it defeats the purpose of our walk. Now she is a very sociable dog and loves everyone she comes in contact with and say we are at the petstore and I let people pet her there, especially the staff. And she is very social with neighbors, family, and friends. But if we are out on our walk at the park or the greenway, I've learned that everyone wants to stop and pet her. Well if we stop for everyone we aren't going to get our jog in and we aren't going to get the exercise we went out to get. So my rule on walks is No One pets her. We are out there for a purpose and that purpose is to exercise. I do two things when we are out for our walk/jog. Sometimes I carry my Ipod but I don't turn it on, because I like to be aware of my surroundings but people don't usually stop us when they see I have my music player because they know I most likely can't hear them anyway. What they don't know is I don't turn it on. The other thing I do if I don't have my Ipod with me and someone wants to pet her, I say "Sorry she is in Training right now" And its not a lie, we are training to get those extra pounds we put on off.

But like at home with friends, family, and neighbors (well neighbors we know) I don't mind them petting her. She knows them and they know her and they know how to approach her. At the petstore even though she is a great dog I keep her on a short leash because Kids like to run up behind her and try to grab and pet at her. I usually do not allow kids to pet her like that. I stop them and tell them how to properly approach her and introduce themselves to her. I'll tell you though parents don't like when you tell their kids how to approach your dog or not to pet your dog. But my dog is my property and I don't go and touch their fancy car without permission. Don't touch my dog without permission.

My dog loves kids, but I intend to keep it that way. So there will be no rough behavior from a child around my dog. And most kids don't ask permission.
I'm not a social person so anybody who just comes up and trys to pet my dog without asking, won't be petting my dog. I'm more apt to let someone who asks permission to pet my dog pet her than someone who doesn't. However Sasha would be friends with everyone if she could.

I don't really worry about someone trying to snatch her. They would regret it if they did, she wouldn't stand for it. Besides she came to my husbands defense when he was almost mugged.

To the OP, pepper spray is affective. And by the looks of Choco, ya'll should be able to flee the seen. Unless of course you cannot run very well. In which case you need a gun. Naturally every one is telling you to learn how to use one first, but if you carry a concealed hand gun license you will have all the training you need. If you dont have your CHL(Concealed handgun license) then you are walking around with a felony strapped on you.

If you're worried about running, go the the gym. Take your dogs walking in public places, and if you are scared and weak, I hope you can scream. If someone messes with you and you're uncomfortable, SCREAM! lol. Choco will do the rest.

She has socialized J as much as much as she's been able. He is not protection trained. He is HA with a crappy, nervy temperament and would be a serious serious liability in the hands of someone less capable than she is. He is very lucky to have her imo.

Taking a gun course and perhaps hitting the gym wouldn't be a bad idea for you. And probably fun to boot!

I allow people to pet my dogs all the time I do not have an issue with it and as far as someone stealing your dog while your walking it is very unlikely. if you leave the dog alone outside that is the time the dog will most likely be stolen.
Do not get a gun chances are you will get shot with your own gun.
People go thru the BS concealed weapons class and think now I will carry a gun but the fact is learning some basic gun handling and shooting a few targets will not prepare you for shooting someone. Guns give many owners a false sense of security and that owner will put themselves in situation because of the false sense of security that they normally would not. Maybe you should take some self defense classes this will help you build strength and real confidence and also teach you how to avoid most situations and how to defend yourself enough to possibly get away from the ones you cant.

I decide with whom my dogs interact with. They are social but IMHO, how they act is one thing, letting complete strangers actually pet them is another.
