Another reason why I can't stand most people!!!
![]() Dog nearly dies inside hot car Posted: Jun 21, 2010 9:48 PM CDT Monday, June 21, 2010 10:48 PM EST Updated: Jun 21, 2010 9:48 PM CDT Monday, June 21, 2010 10:48 PM EST By Janice Broach - bio | email MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Memphis man has been charged with animal cruelty after his dog nearly died inside a hot car. Monday evening, Coco, a one-year-old pit pull, was hooked up to IV's, fighting for her life. "We're attempting to save her life," said Clarita Atkinson, an administrator at the Animal Emergency Center on Summer Avenue. "If there is a point her blood work is not looking good, and that's not possible, then we will have to euthanize her." Gregory Fisher and Amanda Lillard are behind bars charged with animal cruelty after Coco sat in a hot car for hours on Saturday. According to a police report, Fisher and a friend left the dog in a car and went inside a plasma center. They stayed inside for four hours. When they came out, the dog was unresponsive. As the pair drove off with Coco almost dead in the backseat police, with Lillard at the wheel, police pulled them over for having no tail lights on their vehicle. It was then that officers saw the dog in the back seat. Officers cooled the animal off and brought her to the Animal Emergency Center on Summer Avenue. Atkinson said Coco was in such bad shape they considered euthanizing her. Gregory Fisher listed an apartment in Robinsonville as his address. Monday, no one answered the door there. Fisher told police the dog belonged to him. Neighbors we spoke to said they do not remember him having a dog, but added they don't really know Fisher. Atkinson said it will cost thousands of dollars to save Coco, with no one at this point offering to pay the bill. But the animal Emergency Center is trying hoping it will all work, and Coco will live. Animal experts say pets are affected by the heat just like humans. Officials are still not clear why the dog was left in the car for so long. Copyright 2010 WMC-TV. All rights reserved. This proves that:
I have taken Sasha with me to run to Home Depot or Wal-Mart or something and left her out in the Jeep while I ran inside. I've done it in the middle of July. But I keep a spare door key in my wallet and IF I take her with (which I don't do very often) I leave the vehicle running and the air conditioner going with the vents on the passenger side aimed at the seat. I also orient the vehicle when I park so that the sun is not shining on her. Best solution: Leave the dog at home where there is water and shade (or A/C if they are inside). But IF you have to take them along leave the car run so they have the A/C. I know some places you can't leave a vehicle idle in which case leave the dog at home. I mean damn, if sitting in the car in the sun for more than a few minutes with the windows up is too hot for a person to be comfortable you don't need to have a PhD to realize it's not going to be any better for the dog. |

this makes me so mad, I leave my dog in the car to go into stores...but I leave the air on and the doors locked (I carry a spare key with me) and I am not gone more than 10 mins. Also I have a bowl in my cars and if I am in for any length of time I buy water (even though when I get in the car even if its in direct sunlight the car is cool and the dog is not panting, its sleeping, and wakes up to give me kisses, not panting at all..) 4 hours...that is RIDICULOUS an hour is to much, a half an hour is too much. I will admit I have left Goren in the care for about an hour before...IN THE MIDDLE OF WINTER when it was like 30-40 degrees out...and it was night time, already had water in the car to boot...but seriously they are out on bail, makes me so mad

The sad thing is, the people left the dog in the hot car for 4 hours so they could donate plasma. The people that "donate" plasma, really aren't donating, they get paid about $40 each time they donate, and can donate twice a week. So in their quest to "help" people by donating, they let their dog die. Of course, most people don't care about helping people, they only care about making their $40... people do it every day. It looks good because it looks like they are "helping" people, but in most cases, they couldn't care less about the "helping" part of it.

How can you love your dog so much that you want to take it every where, but be so stupid that you would subject it to the heat! I don't know how you fix that. To most of us, it's second nature. I don't know how people can be alive and not be aware of what's all around them. Carla |

I worked at a bar and we had a regular who use to come in, leave his dog in the car in the dead of summer, and drink away the afternoon. Everyone that worked there was so furious and we would always ask him why he couldn't take the 2 minute detour to his house and drop the dog off on his way to the bar. All of his friends would defend him because "he loves that dog so much". It doesn't matter how much you love a dog, love doesn't stop a dog from dying. We would go out during our shifts and give him bowls of ice water. One night one of the other waitresses (she was a good friend of his) went out to his car and she reached into the window and unlocked the door. She grabbed the dog and brought him into the restaurant and gave him a bucket of water and a whole bunch of goodies lol. He parked his butt on a booth and spent the rest of the day getting pet in the nice air conditioned bar haha. Good thing the only people who went there were regulars and weren't going to complain about a dog being in the bar.

You know I can't believe how stupid people can be. We went to get Sashas dog food last night. Sasha stays home. And as hot as it is here right now. I believe we got up to 98 again yesterday. Somebody had left their little black fluffy dog in the car. Windows cracked maybe an inch. I don't care that it was evening it was still very hot out. Here is the worst part as we were leaving the couple came out of the restuarant there. It would have been one thing if they had left the dog in the car to run in somewhere for a minute, but if they just had a meal at that busy restuarant that dog was in that car over an hour atleast in the heat. People make me so mad. Oh and the dog was barking loudly too and there was a Clop Cop (Cop on a horse) patroling that parking lot that passed by the car with the loud barking dog while we were there twice and did nothing. Maybe he couldn't hear it but I don't know. Someone was in the process of telling him about it but the people left before he got to them.
People make me sick. |

More people need to think of others, without rewards/incentives/perks for doing so.It's a shame we NEED to have those type of incentives to be willing to help others. ![]() I hope the dog pulls through and does ok.Prayers sent for her recovery and a loving new home. |

This is so sad
![]() ![]() Several years ago I worked for the humane society here and I stopped by there to pick up something and had my dog with me Storm. I was just going to run in and back out so didn't see it as a problem. It was a warm day but not HOT, the windows where down and she had ice in a bowl. I went inside and got kind of preoccupied helping with some paperwork. I didn't FORGET her but I knew she was okay. I'd say I was inside for about 10 minutes. When I go back out to my car the head investigator (and my then boyfriend's dad) was standing at the car and called me over. He had his digital thermometer and showed me its reading. It was reading 108 degrees!! I felt like crying! I got Storm OUT of the car and took her inside to the air condition adoption center and got her some fresh water. The head investigator wasn't MAD at me but told me he has seen dogs died in less heat then that and I needed to be more careful. I could of just died right there, I was so embarrassed! I worked for the humane society and put my dog in danger doing something that stupid! So now I don't take the dogs unless they can go inside wherever I am going. Samson's last car ride for the season was a week or so ago...it's just TOO hot now especially since I have no AC in my car. People just don't get it....it's like the morons that leave CHILDREN and BABIES in hot cars! That is TOTALLY insane! |

RIP poor pup. Glad they are being charged with animal cruelty.
We don't take our dogs to the store for that reason when it's blazing hot or cold because you never know how long you will be even if you intended to be there for a short time and the lines are freakin' long. We never take them when we go out to eat either. We only take them for car rides when it's cool. It is usually in the morning or the late evening. I'm not saying we don't take our dogs anywhere. If we go to get gas, we take them since we won't be long. I take them for walks more than anything though when it's cool out or the heat isn't that bad. It just makes me furious someone would leave their dog in the car for 4 hours when it's hot when they know they won't be able to come back right away. Luckily the police caught them when they did but the dog still paid for it's life. ![]() ![]() |

Once its past 70...nothing past 5 min is ok with me.
Yesterday, it was 89 here, and I was taking the dogs to the farm. I don't have airconditioning in my car, so I give them Kongs that are filled with low sodium chicken broth and froze. I also wet the dogs partially down before I go anywhere. (I have two dogs, I gave up having a spotless car years ago). I had to get gas and they didn't have a swiper thingy at the pump...I RAN into the station and RAN out...I did not pass go... HOW CAN YOU NOT consider your dog??? This is one of my biggest considerations...I don't need air conditioning on in my home...I'm a tough cookie and cheap as hell with that stuff...BUT I keep it on all summer becuase instead of wearing shorts and sweating to beat hell like me, my dogs have fur...and it wouldn't be fair to them. |
