Well I'm fat (admittedly so, mainly from health problems but also from bad eating habits) but I don't want my dogs to be fat. OTOH, I don't want my dogs ribs showing either, even when I was showing Samson and Deisel I never got them down so low that you could see their ribs.
When I start showing Nala same with her...I will just tone her up but not cut her weight any.

in the world we live in if your dog is healthy enough to walk from the couch to the water bowl without getting out of breath then it is underweight.

Id rather have a dog who needed to gain a few pounds than one that needed to lose a half a pound

Hmmm yes I get it. I condition my dogs to the point that they are at the optimum weight for performance in the job I give them. That involves showing ribs. The actual weight depends on that particular dog. I could care less about comments about feeding my dogs. When I walk them now I have on my MP3 player anyway, so they are talking to the wind.

It seems like only fat people with fat dogs make the comments.

So today I got criticized for animal abuse because you are able to see ribs on my apbt, but just the lower first 2. Anyways, I'm used to hearing people say i abuse them by starving them and I normally just tell them that he's had his ribs showing since he was 7 weeks of age. After I tell them this, they normally leave it at that and continue on their way, but this prick had to continue bashing me by stating that my dog is "so unbelievably short." He goes on to say that I've stunted my dog's growth because I've underfed him and he points out that a "pit bull" is supposed to look like his "pit bull." His dog looked to be about 22 inches withers, had an underbite, and was black and white. He looks like an american bulldog or boxer mixed with apbt. His dog also weighs in at a staggering 140 # (the dog has a pot belly/keg) and he kept on saying that his dog was exactly as "brolic" as he is as a 3 month old pup, only in a smaller package. His dog also kept on barking, raising teeth, and rasing his hackles at my dog while my dog remained silent while leaning at the end of the leash with his challenge tail flared up. I called his dog out of standard and that no purebred apbt would be 140# and that 22 inches withers is really tall. He said his dog is the real deal and said the bloodline is chinaman. I asked him if the dog is registered and he said no, but he paid a grand for his dog from a breeder. I laughed and said he got taken on a ride by a BYB. He laughed and said I was jealous

Has anybody else have people verbally assault them because their dogs are in shape and healthy? I don't mean just criticizing since I'm sure most of us get this everyday, but I mean people that get in your face about it. How do you deal with this?
Hey Dawgs!
It sounds like the NYC plaque lately.
I abuse my dog by training her in the weightpull, and since she is on a diet to shred some pounds I am a cruel SOB for feeding her raw food once a day, granted to say the freezer now belongs to Uma.

I just can't wait until Cleo is old enough to be conditioned!! She's gonna be one heck of a representation of the AmBully breed!

Everyone has a different opinion on what their breed of dog should or shouldn't look like. It's one thing to voice your opinion, and another to force it.

LOL you live in NYC too? So you know exactly what I am talking about, all these Gangsta wannabes Did you go to that ambully show in queens? I took my dog there and all of them started talking saying how my dog is weak and would be lunch for their dogs. I laughed because most of their dogs had their hackles raised, teeth showing, and crouched down with tail between their leg. " oh snap, my boy stalking your boy. He's the lion king" LOL. I believe that is a sign of fear rather than aggression. As I recall, apbts that are well bred don't show teeth, raise hackles, bark, growl, and most definitely do not have their tails between their legs.

I got a call from my brother yesterday. He was with a friend and they wanted to invite me to an AM Bully weight pull competition in a couple weeks in Flint. I mentioned there was another in Belleville I was thinking about going to this week and the friend says "Naw, you don't wanna go there. I went last year and it was a buncha small dogs. Nothing worth botherin with!" He goes on to say how Am Staffs and APBT aren't real Pit dogs and not worth seeing pull. I had to get off the phone before I lost my grip!

Man, whats with all the small (within breed standard) dog hate??

You sir are a animal abuser, why would you make your dog do such a thing, it must be carried to the water bowl and back to the couch. The legs are purely cosmetic.

Amstaffs aren't real pit dogs but the american pit bull terrier is the emblem of the pit dog. The apbt won't be able to pull more than a mastiff, but thing is, apbts will die trying to pull to the finish line. I've heard of apbts injuring their hips, hocks, shoulders, etc. by overexerting themselves.

People are just used to seeing fat dogs. I get comments about mine being too skinny. Personally, I think they could both slim down a bit. Sinead was chunky when I got her. She's about the same weight now, but she's put on muscle and slimmed down in the waist. Better food and better exercise.

My Border Collie has muscle definition, but I'd like to see him show a bit of rib. They both get worked out a decent amount, and the vet compliments them on how much better conditioned they are than most dogs she sees.

Never happened to me but then most people in my area don't recognize my APBT as a Pit of any type because she is within breed standard. Everyone here thinks an AM Bully is an APBT .

Most of them here think this is as well, hence why I always get asked if my apbt is a mix, how many months he is, or like today that I abused him.

I haven't been accused of abuse, but thats because most people think my Rita is a Boston Terrier mix. No joke.

My brother, on the other hand, practically accused me of abuse because Rita gained a few pounds (current weight 48lbs) in the last month since she was on steroids and is having a false pregnancy. I keep telling him we aren't giving her treats, she is now off the meds and that she will lose the weight over time as her body returns to normal. He thinks I am BSing.

---------- Post added at 04:02 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:01 AM ----------

I had one guy on a walk to the store compliment me on the looks and condition of Rita before she got chubby. He even knew what she was! I almost hugged him.
