People talk about tooth size all the time. There's even a certain lingo for them. I have heard teeth called K9s, fangs, hangers, tusks & cutters. And yes, certain sizes of teeth run in bloodlines. For example, Zebo dogs & Eli dogs are known for big teeth, but any dog can have them.

The second dog has nice dentures, though I'm told old timers prefer dog's with long, thin canines that were point rather than thick. Apparently the thin canines were better for stabbing while thicker canines functioned like molars, not ideal for piercing.

LOL I have a friend that thinks Jada is not a pitbull because she does not have this huge head and her front legs are not a foot apart...LOL O-well...now it is their teeth

Several dogs had this happen and this left the dog at a SERIOUS disadvantage. I've also heard of some people "sharpening" up the teeth. Not sure how likely they could get away with that. I have never heard this. I knew a Watchdog cross that had what I called "cat teeth" - long, thin pointed canines like a cat's. She put many a dog who crossed her in their grave (accidents of course). BUT ... thick canines work too. In WSK's interview with the Mtn. Man, Mtn. Man said Zebo had canines that were "long & thick as my little finger to the second joint." That had to be pretty long & thick, considering it was a man's hand he was comparing his teeth to. Yet Zebo was a 7xw, his first 4 of which were not only kills, but quick kills. It was rumored Zebo killed Greaser as well. If that were true, it would make him a 7xw with 5 of them being kills. I personally don't think a dog men of either yesteryear or today care what kind of hardware a dog has, just so long as it knows how to properly use them!

Definitely, I believe dogmen of yesteryear only cared for gameness. Though I suppose both types of hardware had its advantages lol. The long, thin cat teeth would pierce and shred the muscles and skin off the bones while the thick teeth would crush the bones.

yeah, dogmen of yesteryear used to sharpen their dog's teeth, but only the dog's with the thick teeth. They did it by putting their dog on anesthesia and by using dental tools, they would file down the teeth into points. Their dogs would go in with razor blades.

I have only heard of shady dog men filing teeth & it wasn't an advantage. All filing does is take off enamel, thus making the teeth thinner, weaker & more prone to break.

The only time I heard of filing was in that movie Off the Chain about pit bulls and dog fighting but it was about backyard fights not historical ones.
