Okay well as many of you may know we are temporarily living in an apartment until we can get out house built. We live in a super pet friendly community, though I have some issues with place, that is beside the point. We have a beautiful 5 month old American Pit Bull Terrier puppy living 2 doors down from us. Now how on earth do they have an American Pit Bull Terrier living here when they aren't allowed, there is a loophole. They adopted this dog from a shelter and it was a Lab mix. There is not an ounce of labrador in this dog. There vet strongly believes this is a purebred APBT, but he has on her records Lab/Terrier mix. Well I have talked with one of the leasing agents at our apartments before and they said that "if the dogs papers or adoption records state American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Rottweiler, Doberman, Akita, or Chow Chow the dog is not permitted. But we can't not permit someone with a Lab mix, or a Terrier mix." They said "Terrier mix could mean anything from Yorkie to Jack Russell Terrier to American Pit Bull Terrier." They also said "If someone comes in with a dog that is a German Shepherd/Chow Chow mix but the dogs adoption and vet records state that the dog is a German Shepherd mix, we can't dispute what the records say. Even if we suspect the dog is part Chow." They said we understand that a lot of people are in situations where they have to give up their dog because no one will rent to them. We try to help them the best we can. I could see the apartment getting into a lot of trouble for this in the future and I would never adopt a dog with pit bull in it until I am in my house. Then I'm going to start looking for my Staffordshire Bull Terrier (possibly SBT mix). That is awesome. So yeah living 2 doors down from us is a beautiful American Pit Bull Terrier. The funny thing is the neighbors keep going up to them and telling them what a beautiful dog they have, they are clueless to the breed if they knew they would probably run. He just tells them Terrier mix, so they can live here. Plus he is adopted there is no real way to know if the dog is pure APBT or not but she sure looks it.
How do most apartments handle mix breeds? Anyone know. |

Thats awesome! Apartments around here can go either way. Some will happily look the other way unless there is a complaint about behavior and some are real strict and won't even allow mixes. The townhouse I used to rent didn't have a breed restriction but a size restriction. Lot of APBT's lived there since they were under the 50lb weight limit.

We had a hard time finding a place that allowed dogs over 15lbs. And then most places that do only allow 1 or have tons of breed restrictions. They allow 3 here. When we moved in one of ours was at my grandparents and we had one pass away. We are down to two and it will stay that way for awhile. |

This is one of the reasons I wanted to buy a house so badly. We may have paid more than its now worth, but being able to have 1-3 dogs of my chosen breed is priceless!
Whenever I talk to people who own Pits and are trying to get a rental I tell them to get CGC and/or temperament testing and to go through private landlords. I even advise talking to those who say "No Pets" in their ads as some will work with you especially if you are willing to pay a fee or have CDC or Temperament Test results. The house we rented before we moved here said "No Pets". I used my kids shamelessly. I told the landlord I really liked the house and would take great care of it during my time there, but I just couldn't take the dog from his kids or the kids from their dog. He looked at their sad faces and agreed to charge me a $150 deposit (non refundable) and $25 per month extra. Worked for me. I was just happy to find the place. |

Having dogs was the main reason I bought a house (aside from all the problems I've had with every land lord I've rented from, god I hate land lords). At least 1 in 5 people in the neighborhood have a pit bull (or a Rottie or GSD). What I paid in rent last year is pretty much what I paid for my house (the house was a few grand more, but totally worth it).
Pretty much all the apartments around here don't allow "aggressive" breeds. Well, at least the nice ones. The ones that do allow pits are run down and very ghetto, and I wouldn't live there if you paid me to. |

Its great you have a nice place to live until you either get your house built or find a rental that will take the pets.
i have to say I don't miss sharing walls. I liek to yell at the hubby as needed and I hate it when neighbors know by the noise level what kind of mood Im in. You know you live in an apartment when you have a fihgt and the next time the neighbor sees you he picks sides ![]() |

I'm always so afraid that my tv is too loud or that my dogs are making too much noise. And they aren't noisy or real barky but I still worry. The only nice thing about living in an apartment in my opinion is you have a pool and you aren't the one responsible for maintaining it ![]() |

Why would you be so picky? I would live where I neede to as long as I could have my dogs. I have lived in some REALLY bad places and I was just grateful that my family (including dogs) could be together.

I moved out of my moms' nice house, in a nice neighbourhood, to keep Bransen. This was the only place we could find that would allow him. A better place will come along. A better dog won't. |

Our next door neighbors just got a cat and I can't keep my dog away from the bedroom wall next to their unit. She knows the cat is there and she sits there and cries. Not loudly but wimpers and she wants to get though that wall. I don't think she would try but that cat is teasing her, she knows its there and can't get to it. What would you suggest I do to keep her from pacing the walls? I've pretty much blocked her from that room but there is another area which she stays in when we aren't home that is up against their apartment that she sits and paces at as well. |
