Default Diesel attacked by a neighborhood dog on our walk today!!!
I'm beyond pissed off today, well beyond. I had words with a neighbor down the street and honestly, I'm shocked by his stupidity.

I was walking diesel down a side road which is out in the middle of nowhere, just down the street from us, not many dogs, not many distractions and a huge unused field we have the owners permission to play with the dogs in. We went out in the field and did some fetch on the long lead and played around with the flirt pole for a while, wore him out and started for home. Home is a good 2 miles from where we were and when we finally got almost there this idiot's American Bulldog (At least I think he's an American bulldog, he claims APBT but this dog is VERY tall and HUGE and his lips hang..aka, he has jowls...least I think that is the word I'm looking for.) comes charging at us. He's hollering for him (His name happens to be Diesel as well) and says oh he don't bite and he loves to play with other dogs.

Meanwhile I'm in between him and my Diesel because friendly is not the word I would describe for this dog. He was growling, barking and lunging at Diesel. We were a good ways from the owners house to and the guy doesn't run up or anything, just walks casually over. The dog ended up getting around me and got a hold of Diesel lucky for me a kick got him off. (Don't have a break stick at the moment) This guy had the nerve to bitch at me because I kicked his dog! Lucky Diesel was fine just slobbery. He tried to tell me his dog has never acted like this and was just trying to play. BULLSHIT! He also apologized...okay fine but keep your damn dog on a leash if he doesn't have good recall and always expect a bulldog to fight!

I'm very much frustrated right now. He got his dog and walked back to his house, we went home, it was obvious he wasn't going to make sure there was no damage. He never even asked. Now I'm not so sure I want to walk down this road again with my dogs which, is a shame because they love playing in the field down that road. I've not run into anything like this before and I seriously hope this is the last time I do...

ETA: It was very clear this man did not have control of his dog as the dog just acted like he was playing a game once his owner got there, the catch me if you can game, but he kept coming back at us as well. which, is how he was finally caught and mind you, not by the owner, by me!

I'm sorry he got attacked and you are lucky it wasn't worse than it was. I wouldn't walk that way in the future because Diesel could end up hurt by that dog. I would definately get a break stick because crap like this happens and it really is the only way to break up a fight between two bully breeds. It's good your Diesel didn't react or it could have been worse.

I am sick of irresponsible people ruining bully breeds. I am talking about the other guy not you.

Krista, unfortunately I'm not sure where to get one, I've actually thought about just making one myself. I don't know anyone locally that has any and I cannot order online which is why at this moment I don't have one. Diesel did growl at the dog when he was attacked but he didn't try to go at him. Definitely lucky there. The guy normally has the dog chained out on what looks like a nice set up (Axel set up). So I have no doubts in my mind this guy has SOME sense somewhere in his head....but the way he acted, he doesn't use that sense. I'm honestly just frustrated with the whole situation.

I have never taken on the "It won't happen to me" mentality especially since we have plenty of bully breeds around here but it was for some reason shocking and maybe a bit of a shocker to me.

Ugh!
IDIOTS ARE TAKING OVER!

When Bransen was a pup he was attacked by an off-leash "friendly" Doberman, who's owner also made no effort to help break it up. No2

That was back before I had a breakstick, but I was able to get the dobe off just by grabbing his collar and shouting at him.
I still wanted to punch the woman in the face, she got mad at me when I told her she should not have her dog off lead, especially when it has no recall whatsoever and is clearly NOT friendly to other dogs.

I didn't buy a breakstick, couldn't find any in town.
I got one passed down from the APBT that my BF grew up with. His uncle actually made it himself, it's just a deer antler widdled down to a wedge with a thick handle-like end.

The one thing that you can not prevent is another owner being irresponsible.

Glad Diesel and you are okay.

Wow... sorry you guys went through this... definitely get a break stick. They don't prevent fights, but definitely break them up quickly. Pit Bull Rescue Central has really good ones and instructions on how to use one correctly.

I agree with the irresponsible owner thing... irresponsible owners that let their dogs run loose are my biggest pet peeve!

Perhaps but that is one persons opinion. I would rather step in between the dogs and prevent my dog from being ripped apart then just do nothing which, is what your suggesting I should have done. Diesel made no moves to defend himself, just growled when the dog did get a hold of him. If I had waited for this guy to come get his dog, I would have ended up with mine dead. I have no doubt in my mind about that. And beings this guys house looks like it is just a bunch of plywood slapped together...I doubt he'd have paid the vet bills. I believe in protecting my dogs and I'd do it again in a heartbeat if I had to.

Off leash dogs are a major problem where I live also. I always worry when my wife is walking our four dogs. No way she could maintain control if things got out of hand.

PS: Took me forever to read that blue ink too. Can't hardly see it.

How is a breakstick used?
There are two ways.

The first way to use it is by wedging the narrowed end between the dogs' top and bottom teeth. You then turn the stick to pry the dogs jaw open.

The second way is only for when you can't get the dogs mouth open, and can be done with any stick/pole/ or a breakstick.
You slide it in between the dogs neck and collar, and twist it to cut of the air supply. As soon as the jaws relax, pull the dog back and make sure they are kept separate.

Thanks, so am I. I just worry that someone else will fall victim to this dog and not be so lucky.
