bad way to start off the day
 

My fiance cleaned his dog's room the other day (YAY he rarely actually takes everything out and mops the floor) his dog is disabled (was hit by a car a year ago last Jan. and cannot use his back legs, we are putting him down soon but that is my fiance's dog so its when he is read, the reason for putting him down is not because he is disabled, its because he wont play anymore, he used to be total ball driven, now he just wants walked, and also he drags his legs and no matter what if he is outside he ends up cutting them up, he also cannot hold his bowls or pee so has to be in 1 room, not a good life for him at all so it would be best) anyhow, my fiance forgot to put the brick in front of the door to the yard where Goren is. This brick has not been on the door I guess since he cleaned it out 2 days ago. This dog is an escape artist and got out there and stayed in the yard for a bit cutting up his legs, then pushed the back fence up (At least he did not chew through it like last time) and got out. Thank god he did not go far, someone knocked on the door this morning and he was laying in the grass next to the porch bloody legs and all. Now though I have to worry about if Goren learned how to push the gate up (we had stakes in the ground at that part of the fence that are 6 inches deep to keep the fence down since the rest is double and that one spot is not) Goren was on his chain spot thank god, and thank god he did not get Doobie tangled in the chain, but after walks I let him off the chain for about 2 hours in the yard now I probably wont get to do that http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/frown.png I don't like my fiance's dog much anyhow and now I don't like it even more

so i have a question- how come the disabled dog is an inside dog and goren is not? it seems that during the warm months that might make more sense, especially considering that the disabled dog is incontinent...
have you talked with the vet about that dog's quality of life? what a shame for him to be like that...

I agree with DDD on this.Why is that dog still around,when he cannot walk without damaging his limbs so badly and is so incontenent? Open wounds are a gateway to infection.If he's paralysed,he at least cannot feel the pain.But I am sure he is getting all kinds of nasty stuff in his scraped up leg wounds,from dragging on the ground-wich isn't a good thing.You need to do something before he gets a massive infection or something.You may want to consider either putting him down, OR a doggie wheelchair and some diapers with a tail hole to make him more comfortable if you don't want to PTS. At least it would take care of the whole mess and scraped legs issue.He may even be able to play and enjoy life in a wheelchair.

Why not get a dog wheelchair? If he's not in pain... It's a lot more work to change diapers and such, but I think he'd deserve it. Is he stuck in the room all the time?

Dogs can have a good quality life in a wheelchair.

if you don't have the money to buy one you could salvage some wheels and stuff from the dump and build one.
i love building stuff out of trash.

he has a wheelchair, you cannot leave a dog in them all the time, they make the feet swell up (it is custom built 300$ I think it was) I WANT to have him PTS but I have little say in the matter, it's not my dog, its my fiance's and with that he has said he will have him PTS but not yet, I have already spent probably $1,000 in vet bills on him, the reason his legs get cut up is not because he drags them so bad, its because when he is outside he goes up and down the steps the entire time. The reason he is inside and Goren is out is because of what just happened...he cannot be confined in a yard, last time we tried he ended up 3 blocks down in about 10 mins. So he gets only supervised outside time (as in if he is out someone is watching him 100% of the time and ignoring everything else), The room he is in is in a room that connects the garage to the house, he is not aloud in the house, he is only able to be in that room. O and I have said we are not having that dog when I am preg. we are not having that dog when we move, I cannot even sleep in MY bed due to pee smell from that room going through the walls into my bedroom (I have slept on a futon mattress in the middle of the living room floor for a year now...) I miss my bed so much, yea after he cleans the room the room smells ok...for about an hour or so until there is enough pee to make it smell into that room, even with the window in the dog room open 24/7 its pretty bad. I hope he has him PTS soon, it will be a major relief and he will not suffer (it took me 8 months for him to realize he needs to be put down) he has told all his family that he is going to do it, and they are 100% on my side that it should be done, I think he was hoping one would say no but they all agreed with me so now its just sit and wait (he basically said he wanted to wait till after the holidays and it got warm so he could take him on some long walks and stuff 1st)

yea, I just hope my fiance will put him down sooner rather than later, basically this dog grew up with him, my fiance is 25 the dog is 10 so yea there is a lot of love there but if I "make" him put him down then I can just see it turning around in the future with resentment, so I have just been supporting my fiance and telling him how unhappy Doobie is, and how he does not play and everything like that so he can see its the right thing.

Maybe the vet can help you with talking to him. Comes a time that because we love that animal we put them down. Quality of life comes in to play does he really want this life for the dog would he want that life for himself. You should not make him put the dog down but you can try and help him understand that putting the dog down would be the greatest show of love and respect he would be putting his own selfish feeling aside and doing whats best for his dog...I have been in those shoes and its tough but its selfish to keep the dog around because we do not want to let go

yea, the vets have helped a bit but its hard for him, I am preying today was a wake up call for him. (he complained like a week ago that Doobie never gets outside because of MY dog...this proves MY dog is not the reason lol) I just hope he will do what he knows is right soon, I know when he washed his room and stuff he was upset, I did not push him into talking about it but did ask him when he was going to do it and he said after some long walks and some more time so its going to be soon, well I prey it will be soon anyhow.
