Default Guarding
I was just curious to see some others opinions. I have an almost 9 month old amstaff. There has been some breakins around the area the last couple weeks. If someone was to try to get in my house do you think that he would try to protect or since the breed is so great with people would he just lick them to death. Thanks for your opinions.

if you need protection or a guard dog, get a guardian breed or security alarm system.
the American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pitbull Terrier and other bulldog breeds are NOT a guardian breeds.

If there are no gun laws in your area, get a gun.

Most APBT's would help a thief carry your stuff to their car. If you were being physically attacked, it's hard to say. Some feel the drive to defend their people from a serious threat, some don't. Only you know your dog and have a good idea of how he's react. I wouldn't rely on ANY dog to be my protection...dogs can be shot, and I'd seek out other, more reliable means if it's a genuine concern.

Exactly, asking him to do anything in that regard is only setting yourself up for disappointment.

good post.... if somebody breaks in my house, my dogs will show them to the treat bowl, and then they can have what they want out of the house.

Thanks for your opinions. I actually think my dog will hold them down and lick the crap out of them. I was just curious what others opionios were. I know in the breed standart it states that they are very keenly alive to thier surroundings and his courage is proverbial. Thanks for your opinions

They are very "aware" of their surroundings... however, mine would not mind a stranger coming in and hauling off all the good stuff... as long as they give them cookies first.

That she'd be so excited to see someone new that she'd follow them when they left. I'm fairly certain she'd follow them around the house with a toy in her mouth wanting to play.

Havanna wouldnt go if they had a Steak. She is borderline shy. No way is she going for cuddles unless she knows you very well.
Sox is very alert. I have to tell him its ok in order for him to be ok with a total stranger.
Then he is fine for petting or anything else.
I am not sure he would rush anyone, but he sounds like a hound from hell barking.
Kane is Soxs son and pretty much the same way.

My dog would guard, I don't care who says APBT's aren't a guardian breed. I know they aren't but my dog doesn't let people into my house without my permission, he barks and circles them until I tell him to relax. But he wouldn't attack or bite someone breaking in, the only thing he would do is scare them away or try and keep them there.

My pit bull wouldn't do shit. He doesn't even bark if someone is in the yard. Now, my GSD mutt will bark and snarl but won't back it up. My Coonhound, however would possibly/probably maul a person if they physically threatened me or intruded uninvited onto HIS territory. A Coonhound is definitely not a guardian breed but he didn't get that memo.

Odie will bark and scare the crap out of you till I tell him it's Ok. D.D would run away piddling. The only way Odie would let you love on him if you're a stranger is if you had some popcorn. That dog won't eat raw meat, but Popcorn he's all over that!

I don't think the pit is a good guard dog. All of the "they're too people friendly" aside, from what I can see they aren't the most alert of dogs. Now i don't agree with the whole "they won't bite even if you attack me" thing. I think the people who say that are just going overboard or the dog has adopted their attitude. Or actually the favorite words of some owners of maulers are "Oh he won't bite, he's just a baby", and the dog bites someones face off.
