The dogs are tragic pawns in the criminal world ...
Now, I'm not defending other cops that freak out the moment a dog (ANY DOG) approaches them, but in the defense of police officers I do need to say my piece ... Criminals not only use these dogs for fighting, or for intimidation, but they also serve as cheap labor for drug dealers (usually a look out). Its so unfortunate that these dogs' sense of loyalty is used against them. And when serving a warrant if there is a dog in the front yard/back yard, police are not going to stop and try to talk the dog out of its duty to the criminals ... That dog will be shot and killed no questions asked ... And even though I'm a APBT owner, and I know how sweet these dogs can be, I would not hesitate to shoot one being used by an unscrupulous person (dependent of the situation I were in) ... In my world, a dog is just as deadly as a gun ... The only difference is a dog doesn't miss ... Again, I cannot condone Officers that are all around jumpy around ALL dogs and shoot first and ask questions later (lest we remember the friendly Golden Retriever gunned down in front of his young family on a traffic stop) I'm just trying to give insight on how most Officers have daily contact with these dogs ... It's most unfortunate, but I think the people we should be MORE critical of are all the individuals in this world that make our dogs into these "beasts" that average people believe are the breed standard. |
