Default Male or Female?
Hello all,

I am looking to get a Staffordshire Bull Terrier soon, and would like your opinion on which sex to get. I have been going back and forth between the two. The pup will get fixed no matter what the sex is. What are the pros and cons of both sexes? Personalities? Ect...

Thanks

This is just my experience. But for some reason, no matter the breed, the females are always "harder" to train. Another huge con of having a female is that my female APBT's pee has completely killed our grass in a few huge patches, while all of my male dogs have never done this. I am sure others will chime in with responses soon

I've had the opposite experiences as AprilArchambeau. Rosie will do ANYTHING to please you, while Nick just DOES NO CARE. If he can see good reason to do something then he'll think about it. Rosie is eager, eager, eager and WANTS to please you.

I think it's more of an individual dog than a female/male thing.

I did notice a difference in training horses too. Mares are much more willing, while the geldings are a lot tougher to get thru too, just don't seem to care.
But again, I think it's more of an individual thing.

We did notice some brown grass from Rosie at the first house we rented, but since we bought this house, we haven't noticed any... I wonder if it's more to do with the soil. My parents have always had female dogs and have never had brown spots.
The house we rented had horrible soil and terrible drainage. Not so here or at my parents farm.

Not quite sure about the soil thing. I asked my vet about it and he said it has to do with the hormones in her pee, and he said every dog is different as far as the amount. He told me that I could spray my grass down with water every time she went to the bathroom, but I really do not feel like following her around with a water hose spraying where she pees

Thanks for all the responses. I guess I'll just go see the litter and pick out the one I like. Maybe I'll let the pup pick me out instead. Thanks again.

I've actually found the same thing as April...maybe that's why I have three male dogs...

Check out the sticky on what should be asked when buying a pup while you're at it, it's very informative!

Thanks, I checked out that stick already. One more question, I have an opportunity to get a 10 month old male from a friend of mine. I met the dog with my family, and they love him. He is getting a little big from standard so my friend was looking to sell him to me. He has a great pedigree and won 1 show so far. Do these dogs adjust well? What do you all think?

Wait, he's getting too big as far as showing standards and so he can't be shown so they want to get rid of him? Can you clarify please?

Do you know all of his history? I think it'd be fine, I brought Bubba into the family when he was four and everything went well, it just depends on the dog but it sounds like you guys like each other

i thought females killing the grass was due to the fact that they unload all in one spot and the males spread it around. i thought it was due to nitrogen?

I've actually never had an issue with my female killing my grass, but she doesn't drink or pee a lot. Which was completely opposite of my lab. He had a disorder that made him drink HUGE amounts of water and pee constantly in large amounts (and never lifted his leg). Neither of them killed the grass though. Not sure if it was because the labs urine was so diluted but I've never had a problem with them or my ACD (female) I had before them. I will say the two females were much easier to "train" (they didn't really take much training, they pretty much just behaved well without much effort on my part, although my ACD did try to "herd" me on our walks, which although she never nipped got annoying cause I kept having to switch hands behind my back with my leash from her switching sides behind me). My lab only listened if food was involved but generally was well behaved, just didn't listen.

From what Odies breeder has told me,if your a woman get a male dog and if your a man get a female dog. They will cling to the person better. That's why I got Odie. He is a clingy boy and does anything for me. Or it just could be him.

I've always had females....just a personal choice.

And I don't think being a woman/man has anything to do with what sex is more clingy...

I'm a woman with 3 females and if I stopped quick...they'd all be lodged in my arse...

I got Buffy first bc I wanted a female. I thought she would know I'm a female as well and we would "bond" or something b/c we are both girls, like we could both wear pink and be BFF's (ok, ok, I was young/dumb ...I was a teenager). It could not be more opposite. Buffy is like the protective Mother. Always watching what is going on around, paying attention, very stubborn, did I mention stubborn? she loves everything and is very gentle but more on the serious, but relaxed side. She will play and run but ONLY when SHE wants 2. Oh and Fetch? yeah right, lol. I will throw a ball or stick at her and she will just walk the other way or watch me throw it, roll her eyes and lay down. Spanky is in his own little world, Spanky, OMG, he is my velcro dog. He doesnt leave my side...ever! He is as happy-go-lucky as they come. A sweet sentisive dog. But he pounces and plays like a cat jumping on things not realizing he is 78 LBS. Totally not the smartest cookie in the box either. With Buffy when I am sick Buffy is right there, being her Motherly self. WHere Spanky is always there no matter what.

Buffy is fearless. Spanky is scared of his own shadow.

Spanky is such a Mommas boy where Buffy is a total Daddys girl.
I thought it was going 2 be the other way around.

I have not had a problem with either of their urine staining the grass. At our house here on PA or our vacation house at the beach (different kinds of soil I guess?). But I have seen those pill/supplement things u give your dog 2 help w/ the brown grass. I don't know if they work or not. I've seen them at pet stores.

I have actually found that males bond more with female owners and that men bond more with females, it's just what I've found though! Then again, generally all the dogs that I'm basing this off of were related somewhere down their line...maybe they're just mutant genetic freaks

I wonder if that is because of how the owners see them? like daddy's girl and a mama's boy?

Yeah, that's what he said "too big from standard". His height is alittle big, a bit overweight, but very loving and fun. He spent the day with my other half at our home today to see how things would go; it was perfect! I know his history (met mom, dad is a champion from california, flew in semen). My friends wife just gave birth, I think that has alot to do with it. The pup is very active, his other dog is 6 years old, much calmer.
