Those particular fighting dogs in Wilkes County, NC were very, very
different than the Vick dogs. Whereas Michael Vick was a pro football player that fought dogs as a hobby, the breeder of these dogs was a globally recognized professional dogfighter. Vick was not a good breeder, and he lost most of his fights. His dogs were a poor representation of true fighting dogs. With the Wilkes County dogs, even the puppies as young as 8 weeks of age where attacking each other and drawing blood. We had to buy new cages to separate litters of young pups. With the Vick dogs it cost nearly $1 million to “rehab” 49 dogs, and still half of them are in solitary kennel runs, unable to socialize with other dogs. In this case there were 127 dogs, and they are far more aggressive than the Vick dogs. The “misleading claims” have come from a couple of individuals that never saw these dogs, and choose to throw stones on the internet. I saw these dogs, and in fact handled many of them while they were being evaluated. These dogs would most certainly kill any other dog they could get to. It is very sad that people are also missing the bigger story, that our work has shut down one of the top breeders of fighting dogs in the United States. Dogfighters are seeing their hero’s go to prison. This is having an effect, and many dogfighters are leaving that world behind as they recognize the cost of doing business is too great. HSUS is the only organization in the United States that has an entire campaign that works full time on animal fighting issues. I support pit bull rescue, but there has to be a group that goes farther and hits at the root of the problem. That is what we are doing by putting leaders in the dogfighting criminal underworld out of business. Lastly, Wilkes County euthanizes 3,000 healthy, adoptable animals a year simply because there are not enough good homes opening their doors to these needy animals. I find it disturbing that the groups clamoring for media attention over these 127 dogs raise no fuss, and offer no assistance, for the other 3,000 dogs put down in that county each year. Sincerely, John Goodwin Manager, Animal Fighting Issues The Humane Society of the United States 2100 L St. NW Washington, DC 20037 301-258-3156 |

Wow, he puts up such a righteous front when all the while he is for getting rid of ALL pets and domestic animals of any kind or breed. I am sure all the pups were "born killers"...geez.
The problem is the tactics that HSUS uses that circumvents "peoples' rights" to protect themselves from vindictive litigation. |

Some of these dogs probably had issues but to euthanize every single one of them is ridiculous. If he had let other organizations in to evaluate the dogs at least we could have some sort of peace of mind that each individual dog was given a fair chance - that is one of the more frustrating parts. "Rescue" is not mass slaughter.
I don't think the $1 million should be considered the cost of rehab. That money was more or less for lifetime expenses, the true cost of "rehabilitating" the dogs was time effort and love by volunteers and organizations who specifically offered to do this. |

I'm sure some of these dogs wouldn't be socialized with other dogs. But... they aren't other dog type of dogs. ... wtf ...
rehabilitation like said up here probably would have been fairly cheap with volunteer work which I'm sure they would have gotten plenty of. Could have at least not killed ALL the dogs. but like he said of 3000 a year whats another 127 I guess. further more when did I become such a softy for animals.... I don't recall ever being like this till I had Mars. |

The thing is we are never going to change the minds of HSUS or PETA...we have to change the minds of the general public and sensible politicians. We need to let politicians know that if they align themselves with these two specific organizations, we will not support thier election and will work against it.
We also have to be careful and not "act" in the same way they "think" pit bulls do...we need to be more like a true pit bulls...Confident, Relaxed, Trustworthy, Loyal... We don't push them off a cliff, We let them step off the cliff on thier own... |

The big problem fighting HSUS is that they are the richest so called "animal rights organization" out there. The funny thing is that with all that money, they do not nor ever have operated any shelter. They use the title "Humane Society of the United States" to draw people in thinking they are here to help animals. Instead, just like PETA, they are in the business of killing animals. In no way, shape or form are they part of Humane Shelters you see in your communities. Jonh Goodwin ("J.P.") is a self-proclaimed dog fighting expert but has no training or experience with rehab or anything else dog related. He has applauded criminal activities which included arson and belonged to ALF (Animal Liberation Front) which condones any methods possible to reach its goals.
To fight a group like this with a pile of cash behind them, you need to fight smart. We need to get prominent people who themselves own our breed and give them the straight scoop on HSUS/PETA/"J.P.". Once they realize that these orgs and people are trying to irradicate domestic livestock and personal pets from the face of the earth...something might get done. We need to methodically chip away at thier base until they tumble from their own weight... |
