I have my son's dog here, whom I haven't seen since my divorce. That was about 4.5 years ago. Anyway, she acts as if she still remembers me. This dog has always been nervous and it takes her a bit of time to feel comfortable with new people. Last night, she wanted to sleep in my room, rather than with my son and she was prepared to sleep on the cold, wood floor. I had her bed across the room and had to relocate it right up against my bed, so she would sleep on it. She also kept gently putting her nose beside my face. We only had her here less than an hour before we went to bed. Is it my imagination, or is she remembering me? She and I were very close back then and I was devestated to have to leave her behind. It's so awesome to be spending time with her again. : )

A few years ago, we sponsored a little Pit pup girl out of one of our shelters. She was placed with a lovely young couple in San Diego. Prior to that, we visited her at the kennel and took her home with us on week ends.

We were invited to visit them months after the placement.

When we approached their home, 'Goldie' woofed at us from behind the fence; as we got closer, her demeanour changed totally: a wiggly, delighted to see us, roll around, can I lick you like crazy pup.

She clearly remembered us

She's so sweet. I have a feeling that the ex is going to ask us to keep her. We weren't looking to add another dog to the family, but if he brings it up, I'm going to accept. She's getting fed and groomed, but not exercised and the GF doesn't like her, so I feel that living here would be a good thing. It's all up to Mazzi and Biff. We're slowing introducing them to her, just to be sure there won't be any issues. I have a feeling that by this evening, we'll be able to stop the crate and rotate and let them all out togerther, supervised, of course. We've had them all out, on leash, but I'm not sure that Biff is ready yet. Wish us luck!

I think that they do; because Lugz is nervous around new people and he seems to remember those that he has met before.

I have heard that dogs have short memories and don't remember things like that.

However, I am not so sure how true that is. I have gone long amounts of time without seeing Cuddles, and each time, she was happy to see me, as if I had never left. She was the same when she saw my Dad, when he came down to visit me, and that had been at least a two years of Cuddles living down here in NC.

About 20 years ago we had a litter of schnauzers and sold one of them to a friend. We visited the friend at his home almost weekly for a couple of years. He later had to move (military) and we didn't seem him for several years. When we did visit, this dog sat in my lap checking me out for about 45 minutes. All of a sudden she got all wiggly and happy and excited - I think she finally remembered WHERE she knew me from. So yes, I think dogs DO remember.

i think they really do. Peanut hasnt seen my husband much because he is in the Marine Corps and is gone often and when he would come home Peanut would get excited. My husband is deplyed right now (Since October) and I will ask Peanut where daddy is and he gets anxious especially when he smells something that belongs to my husband. Also, when he sees my aunt and uncle every other week or so he gets so excited especially my cousins because they love to play with him.
I think that dogs remember us by our scents.

I don't know any of this for a fact, but I do know that smell is the dog's strongest sense. They may have a limited memory in most cases, but I'll bet scent memory is very strong.

My 5yr old GSD still remembers the women who had him for his first 4 months of life. Its pretty amazing

I've heard of dogs that were abused by, lets just say a man and certain dogs will not be afraid of every man, just the one that did the abusing. That's an extreme situation, so I'd expect the dog to remember that person.

One of the guide dog puppies I raised graduated and I got to see her years and years later. It took her all of five seconds and she got all wiggly and happy. Since she can remember me after a couple years then I think dogs can remember people they've met.
