Default Vaccine for Serenity
That time of year has come for vaccine's.. I don't know wether I should get Serenity's shot or not. This would be her vaccine follow up of a year. Serenity is still going through her training and I'm worried her going to the vet may set her back since she'll have to be handled. She hates being touched by most (%98) of strangers, especially if its anywhere but under her neck. She isn't used to the muzzle yet so she won't be going to the vet till she is ust to a muzzle (just in case). Sunny will be coming along with her since he builds her confidence. Is this vaccine really that important?. Could it wait a few more months (well, next year) or is it important to get soon?.

I'm more worried my training with her will be set back and the stress it could cause her. If and when I get the needle, I will be treating her (food seems to help her, even when fearful). Sunny helps her a lot as she's actually happily wanted a pet, even jumped on her hind feet with Sunny, for a pet when he has (when some one's wanted to pet him and she was with him; i walk them separate now, most of the time). So, I know some things may help her. My main concern is if I do this so soon after the incident awhile back, I may set her back since I'm forcing her to accept her fear as she gets her needle. So, should I wait til next year to work with her longer, maybe take her to get treats off the vet so she gets to know this person?. That doesn't seem like a bad idea and when she's comfortable, then get the needle.

I'd have to ring and ask. It's the update one from her very last puppy vaccine. So, you know how they have there last pup vaccine's and then a year later, the update shot?.

I do not know what the protocol is in Australia, but here in the US the main yearly vaccines are the combo vaccine (distemper, parvo, etc) and the rabies vaccine. Then there are some other vaccines that can be done on a case by case basis such as bordetella, lyme, leptospirosis, etc.

You could always do what my grandparents do and order the vaccines yourself and do them yourself. Idk about where you are, but stores here have vax and Drs Foster and Smith has them on their website too.

"Core vaccines should be administered to all animals to protect them against severe, life-threatening diseases that have a global distribution.Dogs: canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus and canine parvovirus."

So, I know you can do that vaccination here yourself, not sure about where you're at. But that is what I consider to be an important thing to get on a regular basis, especially if you're frequenting areas where other dogs have been.

Vaccinate your dog at the vet. Muzzle her if you have to. Talk to the vet ahead of time about your concerns. Your dog must be vaccinated.

Plus, if you vaccinate the dog yourself, you do run the risk of the vaccine to be improperly handled and/or stored and to be rendered useless.

Thanks for the reply's. I will get her vaccinated, I just may wait about 2 months. I'll be going to the vet, I wouldn't do home vaccine's myself.

Is she due for her shots? If so, I would get it now rather than later so you're up with the schedule.

Yes, she is. She was due a week ago. I just want to get her ust to the muzzle first and meeting the vet a few times. I don't think she'll be able to meet the vet much but I at least want her to accept the muzzle first.

Vets know how to handle aggressive dogs. I would call them ahead of time and see what they say. Just explain your situation.

Well here's how I would put it.1) Get Vaccine=5 minutes with a muzzle/vet and protected from disease.2)Get disease/skip vet=5 or more days at the vets and possible death.

You could allways use the vaccine visit as a training exersize.Just a thought.

^^^These.

Calling ahead of time and explaining the situation (dog doesn't like strangers, will be muzzled, using this as a training exercise) is definitely a good idea. They'll know what to expect, and seeing as it's a veterinary practice, they probably have some protocol for dealing with a difficult dog. Plus they can have everything ready to make it as quick as possible.

Besides all the points already made with her fear aggression issues, it is VERY IMPORTANT you keep her up to date as well!! That could be the death of her if she bit someone and wasn't up to date on her shots!
