Turns out someone who isn't me did win the entire $50 million in Powerball. What I want is someone who wants to spend their entire lottery gambling money on me for a year. The other day my old boss was invited down an opal mine at Lightning Ridge. As they were going down the shaft, the miner said, "see that shaft over there, next door?" ,, Yes.. "nothing" . Then said, "if you asked me a week ago what I was finding in this hole, I'd have also said nothing". .. So is it different this week? "nah, this week there is nothing left to dig but over the last three weeks I took eleven million bucks worth out of here. So you can see why I would have lied last week." |

The tax office is chasing some bloke who operates a gambling ring of mathematicians who use computers to figure odds and place bets world wide. They are doing ok, 35 million dollars worth of ok. The tax golum reckons it is a business. I guess they know what they are doing and it might be under that dreaded tax regulation whose number I forget where thy can chase anybody. But I hope they have thought it through, if it is a business that also means treating losses in respect of earning income so that could be dodgy.
But I suppose the whole complicated tax act is a playground for clever lawyers. |

I've seen them at work here. The same couple of guys go into the clubs and sit there drinking, watching others play the pokies. Surrepticiously they record it all and when they make a decision, they walk over and put a small amount through the machine they know will pay. |

Surrepticiously they record it all and when they make a decision, they walk over and put a small amount through the machine they know will pay. You could theoretically do it for other betting systems. Maybe they are just going around finding the best odds for every horse and betting on them. If you could exploit the different rates between bookies, that might work. You'd need a big stake to make much money. |

One of the stalls at the sideshow at the show in the town where I grew up had those coin machines where you dropped a coin into onto the pile in the machine and a sliding thingy pushed them out. Some fell down the sides and went to the stall holder. The ones that fell down the front go to the punter.
I used to lurk around those things and chuck a coin in when the pile was ready to fall. It was a good earner ![]() |
